  • Peaceful RV park among the mountains of Saxon Switzerland
  • Königstein Fortress 20 minutes’ drive; Dresden one hour
  • Trailhead to Großen Zschirnstein’s viewpoint a five-minute walk away
If your idea of a top holiday involves lots of challenging hikes, please consider the German region of Saxon Switzerland, where dramatic rocky peaks are reminiscent of those in the small Alpine state. Within this area, Wohnmobilstellplatz Kleingiesshubel has peaceful accommodation in a well-maintained garden dotted with fruit trees. Yes, that’s the Papststein mountain you can see from your fully serviced touring pitch – and beyond that is the forested Pfaffenstein flat-top hill. Makes you want to lace up those hiking boots before even setting up, doesn’t it? Then why wait? The Wanderweg zum Großen Zschirnstein woodland path starts a five-minute walk from the site and leads to the Panorama Großer Zschirnstein (a 50-minute hike) viewpoint; lazy types (no one in your party, surely…) can get to this observation point by car in about 10 minutes. Or you can head across the Elbe river to the Schrammsteine area (20 minutes), where you can climb the Holy Steps to spectacular views of the Elbe river valley; if you’re into mountaineering, you can have a go at the vertical walls of the Falkenstein peak. After all this activity, you might well be ravenous. Stock up on provisions at any of the dispensing machines around the area (they don’t just have crisps and chocolate bars here, but also eggs, cheese and sausages) and head back to base to get the barbecue started. Or drive the 15 minutes to Cunnersdorf or Bad Schandau for a range of dining options. The site has charging facilities for electric cars, but please note that there is no drinkable water or hot water.

Local attractions

On the banks of the Elbe, Elbe-Freizeitland (15 minutes’ drive) is the place where you can practise climbing vertical rock walls (useful before heading to Schrammsteine). There are also trampolines, ziplines and Zorb balls, plus falconry demonstrations. Vast and forbidding, the centuries-old Königstein Fortress (20 minutes) dominates the Elbe river from a rocky plateau. An exhibition details the history of the structure, including its past as military headquarters and prison, and a panoramic lift takes you to the top, from where there are far-reaching views of the surrounding mountains. The city of Dresden (one hour) is known for its elegant Baroque architecture. After being destroyed during World War II, several of its most important buildings were rebuilt ‘as they were’ – they include the 18th-century Frauenkirche and Dresden Castle. Collections in the Zwinger complex include the Old Masters Picture Gallery and the Porzellansammlung.
