While on a touring holiday around north-east Germany, you might well fall in love with Müritz National Park, in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district. What’s there to steal your heart, you ask? Well, for starters, this is a gorgeously lush region of ancient woodlands (crossed by a network of epic hiking trails); for seconds, the area is known as ‘the land of a thousand lakes’ – no prizes for guessing why…
On the eastern bank of the largest of those lakes (Lake Müritz) is Reisemobil-Marina Müritz, a dog-friendly spot that you can call home while exploring this spectacular region. Specifically designed for mobile homes, the secure site has spacious grass and gravel pitches with electric hook-up, fresh water and chemical disposal (all included, of course). Other amenities include a toilet block and showers, plus charging facilities for electric cars.
The lakeshore is a 10-minute walk away through a peaceful residential neighbourhood – faster still (less than five minutes) if you hire a bike on site. Once there, urfurl your towel on the sand and just kick back with a good book (or a pair of binoculars – you never know, you might spot eagles or ospreys soaring high in the sky).
Alternatively, you can launch your paddleboard or see if you can catch your dinner in the lake. Don’t fear if pike and perch don’t bite, though: there’s a food shop and a restaurant on site, plus more dining options along the lakeshore and in the town of Rechlin (five minutes’ drive).

Local attractions
Müritz National Park is peppered with tall observation towers (Aussichtsturm) from where visitors can take in the vastness of the reserve and its splendid lakes. During your hikes (or bike rides) you might spot local residents such as sea eagles, woodpeckers and kingfishers.
The Aviation Technical Museum Rechlin (five minutes’ drive or a 15-minute walk) is worth a visit for the location alone: in a testing facility that was used by both the German air force and (after World War II) the Soviet Army. Exhibits include period aircraft such as Fokkers, Dorniers and assorted helicopters.
The leafy town of Mirow (15 minutes), on the shore of the Mirower See lake, is known for the 13th-century Johanniterkirche. Climb up the tower (rebuilt after World War II) for views of some of the ‘thousand lakes’ in the region; then check out the elegant Baroque architecture of Schloss Mirow castle.
