  • Peaceful site in the countryside 50 minutes’ drive from Marburg
  • Grünberg 15 minutes’ drive; Frankfurt an hour and a half
  • Dogs welcome; yoga classes and cycle hire; resident goats
Sitting 90 kilometres north of Frankfurt am Main (an hour and a half’s drive), halfway between the villages of Gross Eichen and Sellnrod (five minutes to either), Camping Gross-Eichen ought to appeal to those who want to immerse themselves in a peaceful rural setting. Take a good look around: there are fields as far as the eye can see, punctuated only by patches of woodland. Does the sight of horses in the nearby paddocks pique your interest in equestrian activities? Good news: there’s a horse- (and pony-) riding centre in nearby Lardenbach (five minutes, or 15 if you hire a bike from the site). Meanwhile, those who find horses intimidatingly large might gravitate towards smaller critters such as the inquisitive resident goats. Visiting winged creatures include kingfishers and storks, but if birds are your thing, consider spending an afternoon at Greifvogelwarte Feldatal (10 minutes), which puts on raptor displays. And if that all starts to sound not quite like the relaxing holiday you had in mind, stop, take a breath and join one of the yoga classes organised on site. In good weather, they take place in a meadow by a stream – practising the tree pose (and other asanas) in this setting ought to help even the most stressed-out urban dweller feel at one with nature. Barbecues are provided (the nearest supermarket is in Gross Eichen), and there’s a washing-up area, in addition to a toilet/shower block. Dogs are welcome, but do keep them on a lead.

Local attractions

Take a stroll through the medieval town of Grünberg (15 minutes’ drive), with its cobbled streets and squares lined with pastel-coloured half-timbered buildings. A former monastery houses the Museum Im Spital, with displays on the history of the town. To the east, the valley of the river Äschersbach is lined with hiking trails leading to scenic viewpoints. Another pretty half-timbered town, Marburg (50 minutes) is renowned for its centuries-old university and its elegant hilltop castle (known as Landgrafen Palace), parts of which date back to the 11th century. In the castle, the Museum of Art and Cultural History holds fascinating temporary exhibitions. You don’t need to speak German to appreciate the musical talent performing at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt am Main (an hour and a half). If classical music doesn’t float your boat, you might prefer to head to the city’s expansive botanical garden, with areas of meadows, beech forests and ponds; or to the riverside German Film Museum.
