  • Family-friendly site in Aussois, near the Parc national de la Vanoise
  • Parcobranche du Diable 15 minutes’ drive; Mont Cenis Lake 50 minutes
  • Playground and TV room; launderette; next door to a leisure centre
Ready for long summer hikes in green Alpine valleys – and maybe the occasional challenging trek up a rocky peak? Camping La Buidonnière, on the outskirts of the village of Aussois (five minutes’ walk), is a great base from where to explore France’s mountainous south-eastern corner. On a plateau 1,500 metres above sea level, high above the Arc river, this peaceful, family-friendly site dotted with shade-giving trees has spectacular views of the surrounding mountain ranges. If those soaring vistas don’t inspire you to lace up your boots, what will? While you plan which hiking trail to tackle first (or next), the kids can burn off some steam in the play area – or fight over the remote control in the TV room… Within a five-minute walk, there’s also a leisure complex with a swimming pool (and a hammam and Jacuzzi for stressed-out parents), a large pump track and tennis courts. But you’re probably itching to go hiking by now, and the Parc national de la Vanoise, with its vast network of trails, is a great place to start. As you cross pastures and climb up hills, keep your eyes peeled for the local wildlife, from chamois and marmots to golden eagles soaring up above. If your backpack is starting to feel heavy, a nearby farm (10 minutes’ walk) arranges guided walks with donkeys. You can sample the local cuisine at a number of brasseries and crêperies in Aussois or in the nearby town of Modane (10 minutes’ drive); if you’d rather cook your own meals, there’s a supermarket in the village. Barbecues are allowed, and the site also has a washing-up area, a modern toilet block with showers and a bath, and a launderette.

Local attractions

The surrounding hills are home to a number of 19th-century forts built to protect the Duchy of Savoy against French aggression. Named after members of the Savoy family, they include the ruins of Fort Charles-Albert (10 minutes’ walk/less than five minutes’ drive) and Fort Charles-Félix (25 minutes’ walk/five minutes’ drive), plus the vast Victor-Emmanuel Fort (35 minutes’ walk/10 minutes’ drive). The Parcobranche du Diable (15 minutes’ drive) is a large tree-climbing park with adventure courses and zipwires for all ages – and all levels of courage. If you feel brave, have a go at the Paradise zipline, which gives you a bird’s-eye view of the Arc river and its gorges. Mountain activities are all very well, but if you miss your watersports, head to Mont Cenis Lake (50 minutes), where a nautical centre hires out pedal boats and kayaks. Note that swimming is not allowed in the reservoir.
