  • Peaceful, family-friendly and pedestrian-only site by a forest
  • Next to an adventure park and a lake with beach and restaurant
  • Fishing, outdoor gym, barbecue area and summer activities
Car? Pffft. Chuck away the vehicle keys for your whole stay at Les Chalets du Haut Forez if you like: the paths at this peaceful and family-friendly park are firmly pedestrian only; you can hire bikes to get around, and the nearest train station is a 10-minute saunter for venturing further afield. Not that you may care to... There's loads to do at this lush Loire spot, including forest bike and walking trails as well as an orienteering course; staff can also help you organise horse riding trips from the site. You can fish or swim in the lake (there's a beach area with a lifeguard on duty in summer months), and there's also an adventure park a couple of minutes' walk away with ziplines, a treetop adventure course and large trampolines. Other facilities on site include a playground, outdoor gym and a barbecue/picnic area; there's also free wifi. In high season staff organise a programme of family-friendly activities, excursions and evening entertainment – you could, for example, join in with treasure hunts, archery and farm visits by day and then boogey along to some live music in the evening (dad dancing particularly recommended). A lakeside restaurant is a few minutes' walk away, along with a couple of bars, restaurants and supermarkets in Usson-en-Forez village a kilometre and a half away.

Local attractions

It's a mere hundred metres from the site to reach the heady activities of Usson Adventure Park, and even fewer than that to be at the waters of Usson-en-Forez's lake and its picnic and games areas, small beach and supervised swimming in July and August. Hiking and mountain bike trails lead from town if you're up for investigating the local countryside (and Usson is on the St James's Way if you're up for hiking all the way to Spain and Santiago de Compostela). More sedately, look into local history and culture with a potter around the Monts du Forez Ecomuseum, half a kilometre from the site. If you do decide to drive while here, take the car for a 20-minute spin north east to hail the splendid Haut-Forez Railway, a tourist train dating from the 1950s. Vintage-style rides are available on a lengthy stretch of the old track between Estivareilles and La Chaise-Dieu, via the spectacular scenery of the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park.
