  • Green and scenic site in the Saône river valley
  • 100 metres from a fishing lake
  • Five minutes' walk from Pont-de-Vaux
It's all green and scenic at Camping Champ d'Eté in Ain, where the team has carefully landscaped the spacious grounds with plenty of plants, trees and flowers to look like a colourful park. Lounging around with book/ tablet/ your own thoughts is easily sorted at this peaceful place, but if you're after more action than that, indoor and outdoor pools along with a water play area for the kids are also popular picks. Or amble along to the fishing lake 100 metres away, cast off in the Reyssouze and Saône rivers, take out a canoe, book a river boat ride via the local tourist office, or go ice skating all year round in town… Champ d'Eté is in the Saône river valley, five minutes' walk from the town of Pont-de-Vaux, its public pool complex, its ice skating rink and its Wednesday market. It runs kids' entertainment and activities like fishing and crafts in July and August, as well as a family night once a week and welcome meets on Monday evenings. A small snack bar serving cold drinks, fast food and ice cream is also open during these months. Anglers will need a fishing licence to cast off in the lake – but these can be easily picked up minutes away in Pont-de-Vaux.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: We liked you could choose your pitch, most of which were spacious and very sheltered with trees. Location to a small village and other towns was great. Pool was pretty good, although it doesn't mention its not on the campsite but is the local pool next door.

Disliked: Toilets were pretty rubbish in terms of cleanliness and you couldn't alter to temp of the showers so they were almost unusable as they were so hot. Pool was absolutely packed as it is used by the public aswell as the campsite.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: The staff at reception were lovely, and helpful. We arrived just after 5pm, and they quickly sorted us swimming passes for the pool next door, before it closed at 6pm, so the kids could have a swim. There was a food truck on site, which was really helpful (as there wasn't much else available onsite, and it saved us having to walk into the town for supplies).

Disliked: Pitches were help yourself, and not clearly marked, so people were parked up at odd angles etc. It took us a while to find somewhere that had enough space, but an electric hookup close enough to plug in to. The showers were really grubby, floor was really slippy and wet. I'm not sure why this is a 4 star campsite - I'm guessing because of the free access to the public pool next door?

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Convenient to book. Clean location. Friendly staff.

Disliked: At one point during the evening there was only one female toilet in use. The other two cubicles were locked with no one inside and the other ladies sanitary block was closed. Quite noisy at night.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Nice shaded and private pitches, very clean facilities with plenty for everyone, access to the municipal swimming pool. Really peaceful site.

Disliked: A bit chaotic finding your own pitch but once you get your pitch it's all good. Swimming pool didn't open until midday. WiFi only at reception.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Lovely campsite with spacious, self-chosen pitches. The sanitary facilities are a bit older but work just fine. There's a pizza bus on the campsite and a nice swimming pool just outside. Close to the beautiful town of Pont de Vaux. We've been coming here for years!

Local attractions

Ask at the tourist office in local town Pont-de-Vaux about the boat trips arranged by them several times a week in high season; canoe trips are easily sorted around here too, and several marked hiking and cycling trails are in the region. Over a dozen towns including  Arbigny, Chevroux , Fleurville,Reyssouze and Senozan are within five or six kilometres of the site. A short drive south, the Museum of the Bresse covers the area's history, culture, food and costumes from the 15th century to the present day; to the north at Courtes, the Ferme-musée de la Forêt in a 17th-century farmhouse is a registered historical monument with guided and self-guided tours. Kids of all sizes should have a blast at Touroparc Zoo, which has rides, a train, a waterslide and regular entertainment alongside its sizeable menagerie. They'll probably also like a (long) look at the splendid Grottes d’Azé (Azé Caves) and its prehistoric caverns, bear skeletons, thousands of exhibits and an underground river with fossil gallery, lake and waterfall. Lyon, Dijon and Geneva are all within 100 kilometres for day trips.
