A lakeside location is always a lovely thing, but it’s particularly good at Camping Lac du Marandan, in the Isère countryside a few minutes’ drive from the village of Saint-Romans.
Why so? Because the lake at this site has a fabulous beach area where you can have a dip (under the watchful eye of a lifeguard), play games in the sand or launch a free canoe to paddle your way across the water. It’s also got some super angling spots (where you can fish for pike and carp as well as smaller species).
The lake is just one of the attractions at this site, which sits in 55 acres of wooded space with views over the nearby Vercors Regional Natural Park. There’s also a good selection of play kit for kids, including a trampoline and bouncy castle, and a busy weekday programme of activities for them too: think crafts, dancing and nature walks among other things. Games of pétanque, beach volleyball, tennis and table tennis are also on hand, plus evening entertainment for all the family and a weekly Sunday aperitif session.
For food, you can pick up quick eats at the snack bar or take a lakeside table at the restaurant for a more leisurely meal. There’s also a food shop with bread and croissant delivery (just place your order the night before).
As for other essentials, you’ll have access to wifi (at reception), a launderette, a chemical disposal point and regularly cleaned bathrooms with hot showers, kids’ toilets and accessible facilities.

- No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.
- Both the bread/croissant pre-order and the bar and restaurant are available weekends only in May and June and daily in July and August.

Loved the location.
Power optional grass campsite
Liked Spacious, clean facilities. The lake is superb and so are the trampoline areas. Don’t judge the check in as a general experience.
Disliked Doesn’t have Camper van facilities such as water, grey water or toilet disposable facilities.

Local attractions
Drag yourselves away from that lovely lake and you can take a wander along one of the signposted trails that start from the site; or, if you’ve got something more adventurous in mind, hire a mountain guide to take you a little further afield or try out some of the climbing options around Saint-Romans (five minutes’ drive). Places like Vercors Vertical (20 minutes) can provide more thrills like canyoning and caving outings.
If that all sounds a bit too much, opt instead for gentle strolls around villages like Pont-en-Royans and Beauvoir-en-Royans (both 10 minutes) or Saint-Antoine-L’Abbaye (15 minutes), one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. The Fontaines Pétrifiantes Garden (five minutes) and Site Médiéval du Couvent des Carmes (10 minutes) are also nice chilled-out choices.
Elsewhere, the Grotte de Thaïs (10 minutes) and Grotte de Choranche (25 minutes) are cool options for warm days, or you may like to wander through the Old Town and visit the museum and markets in Valence (40 minutes).
