  • Well-equipped site in the Ardèche village Saint-Sauveur-de-Cruzières
  • Aven d’Orgnac caves 20 minutes’ drive; Pont d’Arc half an hour
  • Outdoor pool and river swimming, plus playground, gym and restaurant
A seasonal outdoor pool surrounded by leafy trees and overlooked by rugged peaks, a fitness centre where you can keep up with your cardio or strength training, and a playground to keep the kids busy are just some of the highlights at Camping La Claysse, a well-equipped site on the outskirts of the village of Saint-Sauveur-de-Cruzières, in the Ardèche department of southern France. When the pool is being used for aquagym classes or organised games, you can still take a dip in the swimming basin on the Claysse river, which runs right through the site. Need yet more activity? Gather the troops and challenge other guests to a game of soccer or volleyball, or have a go at archery. Of course, you might want nothing more than to relax with a good book under a poolside parasol, well-deserved cocktail in hand, taking in the spectacular mountainous landscape all around. That's all achievable too – and the relaxed feeling can continue at mealtimes: no need to worry about cooking or finding provisions, since the on-site restaurant serves Ardèche specialities and local wines, in addition to children’s favourites like pizzas and burgers (there is, however, a supermarket in Saint-André-de-Cruzières, a five-minute drive away, should you need it). There are also weekly themed evenings (with meals like paella or couscous) with live music. Keen walkers can follow the hiking trail leading to the small Chapelle de Saint Privat de Chaysselet (a half-hour walk), a hilltop chapel with views over the valley, or stroll through woodlands at the Bois de Païolive (20 minutes’ drive). The Réserve Naturelle Nationale des Gorges de l’Ardèche (40 minutes) is the place for more challenging hikes with added climbing.

Local attractions

This is an area known for its natural caverns, so bring a sweater and head to places like Aven d’Orgnac (20 minutes’ drive), an enormous cave system with boardwalks leading through limestone chambers. If you’re feeling adventurous, join in with organised activities such as descents and climbing; if that sounds too much like hard work, you can chill out with an underground wine tasting instead. One of the region’s iconic landmarks, the Pont d’Arc (half an hour) is an imposing natural arch stretching right across the Ardèche river. You can swim, canoe or paddleboard under it, or simply relax on the nearby beach, marvelling at its size. There’s something for the entire family at the colourful Haribo Candy Museum (50 minutes). While the adults learn about the manufacturing process and historic advertising campaigns, the kids might find their way to the machine room, where they can have a go at filling their own bags of sweets.
