  • Well-equipped, tree-shaded site in Saint-Lager-Bressac, Rhône Valley
  • Indian Forest Ardèche adventure park and Montélimar 25 minutes’ drive
  • Swimming pools, sports fields and play area; cycle hire; grocery store
Chestnut groves, vineyards and plenty of activities for the entire family: if that sounds like your dream holiday, you might want to book a spot at Camping L’Ardecho, a family-friendly site in the village of Saint-Lager-Bressac, in the Ardèche department (hence the chestnuts). The Rhône river flows gently by less than a 10-minute drive away (hence the wines), while hiking trails and birdwatching experiences await in the Parc Naturel Régional des Monts d’Ardèche (20 minutes’ drive). But before you go exploring the many riches of the local area, you might want to check out the amenities in store at your home for the holidays, a peaceful area shaded by tall trees and surrounded by agricultural land. You won’t have to worry (too much…) about the kids being bored, thanks to three swimming pools of varying depths, including a paddling pool for toddlers (and – additional bonus – the pool area is supervised), a playground, ping-pong tables and pétanque courts. After making friends with the other guests, you might find yourself drafted into site-wide football or volleyball tournaments; if you’re not the sociable type, you might prefer to hire a bike and head to the ViaRhôna, a leafy cycle path skirting the river. There’s a grocery corner in the reception area and a bar that’s open until 11pm. A boulangerie a five-minute walk away, in the village, will sort you out when it comes to breakfast and lunch; for everything else, there are a couple of supermarkets in Chomérac (five minutes) and Le Pouzin (10 minutes). The site also comes with a toilet block (including facilities for disabled guests), showers and a launderette, plus recycling points.

Local attractions

Thirteen treetop courses for all levels of ability (and bravery) await at Indian Forest Ardèche (25 minutes’ drive). Guide your toddler from the ground as they navigate their first rope bridge, or have a go at the giant ziplines high above the tree canopy. Montélimar (25 minutes), just across the Rhône, is renowned for its nougat, and you can witness every stage of production at the Palace of Sweets and Nougat. After stocking up on this local delicacy at assorted sweet shops in town, check out the hilltop Moorish/Romanesque fortress. At the Réserve Naturelle Nationale des Gorges de l’Ardèche (one hour and 10 minutes) you’ll be able to swim or canoe under the iconic Pont d’Arc stone arch, or hike to elevated belvederes from where you can admire the Ardèche river winding its way through a splendid forested landscape.
