  • Meals, massages and yoga available, plus outdoor pool
Feeling a bit frazzled and in need of a proper rural retreat, where you can really slow down and tend to your wellbeing for a while? Sounds like you need a bell tent break at Les Jardins Célestes. As the name suggests, this Ardèche site has been designed with peace and tranquility at the forefront. It’s the brainchild of two wellbeing professionals, Édith and Bernard, who welcome guests from all over the world to their gorgeous place in the Cévennes mountains near the village of Saint-Genest-de-Beauzon. On the menu here are all sorts of wellbeing treatments, including massages, acupuncture, yoga and meditation sessions, along with the chance to spend your time simply hanging out in a hammock, taking swims in the outdoor pool and soaking up the fabulous views from this south-facing site. Set in an olive grove at an altitude of 330 metres and with a favourable micro climate, it's a most enticing spot to sit quietly with your book or your own thoughts for some time. Accommodation is in well-designed tents with box-spring mattresses and organic cotton bed linen on the beds, electric points and a private bathroom just outside. A fabulous organic breakfast is provided every morning, and Édith is also happy to provide dinner on request – everything is homemade and vegetarian, using local and home-grown produce, and special diets can be accommodated. Naturally, efforts have been made to preserve the wellbeing of the environment too – there's a phytopurification waste water system, and paints, cleaning products and other essentials are organic.

Local attractions

The southern Ardèche is a great place for some outdoor activity to boost your endorphins. You could start with a hike on the trail that passes the foot of the property, or bring mountain bikes to pedal along nearby routes. Caving, climbing and archery are all popular activities nearby, as are watersports like canoeing, canyoning, paddleboarding and rafting – ask on site for recommendations. There are big sights to be seen, too – including the Aven d’Orgnac cave (45 minutes' drive), and the paleolithic paintings of Chauvet Cave (40 minutes). The Chassezac Gorges (40 minutes) and Gorges de l’Ardèche (55 minutes) are both spectacular natural wonders, and a wander through the limestone rock formations of the Bois de Païolive (20 minutes) is a must. Village wanders should be on your schedule too – especially in Balazuc (half an hour), one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France and with a real maze of cobbled streets to explore as well as a river beach where you can cool your feet afterwards. Closer to home, Les Vans and Joyeuse (both 15 minutes) are both at their best on market day.
