  • Small, family-friendly site just outside the Provençal town of Sorgues
  • A 20-minute drive from Avignon; half an hour from L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue
  • Bar, bike hire and heated swimming pool with slides and hot tub
If you're the kind who'd say 'oui' to strolling through sleepy Provençal streets (and perhaps a glass of Châteauneuf-du-Pape or two), make tracks for Camping La Montagne in Vaucluse. This small-scale site is situated just outside Sorgues, a handy spot indeed as the town centre, shops, supermarkets and the train station are all within a 10-minute drive. Owners Elisabeth and Patrice have set up their two-hectare site with chilling out very much in mind: the place is packed with pine and oak trees for a good selection of shaded spots, and there’s a splendid heated pool with slides, a hot tub and sun loungers. There’s a food shop on hand where you can pick up snacks and essentials, as well as a bar. (Cool drinks on a shaded terrace? That's another 'oui'.) Camping La Montagne is a family-friendly spot, so there's plenty for the kids here too: facilities aimed at younger guests include a play area, games and TV rooms, as well as evening entertainment designed with all ages in mind. If you fancy exploring the pretty surrounding countryside on two wheels, bikes are available for hire on site. Avignon, the Vaucluse lavender fields and the top-notch wineries around Châteauneuf-du-Pape are prime picks for days out (although perhaps don’t cycle home from the latter if you’re planning on sampling the wares). Camping La Montagne also has an electric vehicle charging point.

What customers say

This campsite gets kudos for its clean facilities, helpful staff, and nice pool. Pitches are usually well-kept with water/power. Great stopover, convenient for exploring, but some found it remote for nearby attractions w/o a car. Downsides: gravel pitches, occasional noise, limited showers. A few booking errors noted.

Powered gravel and earth travel trailer campsite (comfort)

Liked Not much

Disliked The site is clearly enjoyed by young families. The pool suits small children but no-one else and the evening entertainment is very noisy - loud disco until midnight.
The description of a quiet, sleepy site is misleading. We would never have chosen it if this was accurate as it is clearly not for us. I think the site will still appeal to those who want it so please improve the info.
We ended up leaving a day early.

Disliked Nothing really. The pool is quite small. Ok for a dip but not suitable for any serious swimming.

Powered gravel and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Quiet campsite and great pool although we didn’t use it on our stay as it was one night. The staff at reception were really helpful. Do remember to ask where to plug electric in as we plugged into wrong outlet but I did go to reception to confirm and was then told number to plug into. A services was nearby for essentials within walking distance too.

Disliked We only stayed one night and could not find fault.

Powered gravel and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Easy to find. Smooth check in. Good bar area. Nice pool. Electric & water at pitch.

Disliked Pitches not really suited to a tent. Windy which made everything very dusty. Karaoke very loud & went on till past midnight on our last night there. Not much consideration for anyone with an early start.
Sanitation was clean, but toilets very low without seats, not good for anyone joint issues.

Local attractions

Avignon (20 minutes' drive) is home to the famous half-built bridge and Palace of the Popes (both of which can be visited on a combined ticket). The Place de l'Horloge, a square lined with outdoor restaurants and cafés, is worth a look too. Orange (25 minutes) has houses of many different colours (although its roofs, appropriately enough, tend to be a terracotta hue) and a collection of Roman ruins including an ancient theatre and a temple. If you like pretty things, take an outing to L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (half an hour) too – the town is packed with art galleries, antique dealers and flea markets to poke about in, as well as its famed ancient waterwheels. For outdoor times, make tracks to the wineries at Châteauneuf-du-Pape (15 minute) or the Lavender Museum (35 minutes). Here you'll learn heaps about two of Provence's most famous exports (which have the advantage of tasting and smelling fab too). Parc Spirou Provence (15 minutes) has rides of all kinds for thrill-seeking kids and grownups, while gentler souls might prefer the fluttering wings of Le Carbet Amazonien butterfly park (25 minutes). The Thouzon Caves (25 minutes) will no doubt be on the list for budding geologists of all ages (and it's even possible that you'll remember the difference between stalactites and stalagmites afterwards…).
