  • Small quiet site with pool and shop on a vineyard-farm in Provence
  • Half an hour's drive to Avignon and 40 minutes to Mont Ventoux
  • Wine and olive oil tasting on site; 15 minutes' drive to lakes
Wild about wine? Obsessed with olives and crackers for cheese? This is your spot. La Grange de Campaulise is a working farm and vineyard in Provence where visitors are invited not just to stay but to get stuck in, tasting the wine and sampling the olive oil extracted from the trees all around. Kids can get involved on the farm as well – picking vegetables in the garden, brushing the donkeys, feeding the chickens and hunting for eggs. And speaking of eggs… the site owners lay on an excellent breakfast at the farm, and the shop sells all the lovely stuff produced here: stock up on jams, wine and freshly baked bread among others. The proprietors also recommend a visit to the neighbouring herd of goats, followed by a taste of their cheese rolled in Provençale herbs. If you’re still hungry, there’s a restaurant five minutes’ walk away and bakeries and supermarkets in Mormoiron, a 15-minute drive away. La Grange de Campaulise is a quiet and family-friendly site, with ample options for leisurely days around the grounds too: there's a playground and games room to entertain the kids, and an outdoor pool with fine views out onto Mont Ventoux.

Liked: Camping bucolico, molto carino, piazzole spaziose e pianeggianti purtroppo niente ombra. Wi fii funzionante. Prezzo ottimo! Lo consiglio davvero!

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: A gem of a site! Small rural campsite which has no defined borders and has a very relaxed atmosphere. It was inexpensive even in high season. Well positioned to visit Provence villages & Avignon. The lovely village of Bedoin is just 6k away & is lovely for a meal out. Also worth a visit is Chateau La Barroux nearby. The site was busy when we went but the friendly owner let us stay for 5 extra nights. They sell home green vegetables & local produce. You can get delicious home cooked burgers & pizzas to which the owner cooks. The pool area was clean & refreshingly in the hot Provence sunshine. The friendly owner let us use her hosepipe to wash & cool our dogs off. The toilets & showers areas are clean and toilet paper / liquid soap is provided (rare in some France campsites). There is an inexpensive washing machine & communal washing line to utilise. I highly recommend this lovely intimate campsite for visiting this region.

Disliked: The only minor issue we encountered was the presence of ants on our pitch and numerous tiny flies getting into our caravan due to the intense heat we experienced. Other than that irritation there were no problems.

Liked: Amazing site to stay at, right in the middle of the vineyards - family run and Carol was amazing host, super friendly. Have a great little shop onsite too, selling homemade and local produce like wine, olive oil, jam and terrine. Can also get bread and pastries also. Would very much recommend and would stay again if back that way.

Local attractions

You might find it hard to move away from such a splendid site and explore; take it gently at first with a 15-minute drive to one of the nearby lakes. Plan d’eau des Salettes has a little beach and tempting waters for splashing in, while Lac du Paty is good for fishing and walks. If that’s a bit low key, then head to the dizzying heights of Mount Ventoux (40 minutes’ drive) for walking trails or the legendary 26-kilometre cycle ride to the summit. Alternatively, get high among the treetops at Accrobranche Parcours in Mormoiron, or kayak down the Sorgue river from L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. For a break from all that high-adrenaline stuff, make time to see the other Provence of ancient villages high over lavender fields and cities stuffed with history and culture. The Papal Palace and legendary one-fifth of a bridge at Avignon and the Roman ruins at Vaison-la-Romaine are half an hour away; the ancient stone hut hamlet of Gordes is 40 minutes. If you’re more into browsing for bargains than rooting around ruins – good news, this is market country. Beetle over to Bédoin on Monday and Vaison on Tuesday for fabulously farm-fresh produce, or fill the boot with treasures from the Sunday flea markets in L’Isle-sur-la Sorgue and Fontaine-de-Vaucluse (40 minutes).
