  • Just three kilometres from the Verdon Gorge
  • Overlooking the Lake of Sainte-Croix 600 metres away
  • Within driving distance of the French Riviera
We can say without un iota of exaggeration that the Verdon Gorge is among the most gorge-ous sights in all of la belle France – et indeed we'd say in all of Europe. And so we're Très Excited Indeed to bring you Domaine de Chanteraine, in the Verdon Regional Natural Park in Var and just three kilometres from this most sublime and scenic sight. Take a look at that paragliding pic: it'd almost make one weep. Not quite enough for your scenic-thirsty selves? Domaine de Chanteraine is also just 600 metres from the Lake of Sainte-Croix, a right purty place known for its scenic setting as well as its swimming, kayaking, canoeing and sailing – and is within driving distance of the many splendid beaches of the French Riviera: le sigh… The site restaurant (dishing up Provençal cuisine, no less) overlooks the lake, and there's also a snack bar (open in July and August) set by the Domaine de Chanteraine pool for quick bites in between leisurely dips. The site grocery shop sells fresh bread made daily. The de Chanteraine pool is heated in low season and is open daily from morning to night; other site facilities among the modern accommodation include table tennis, volleyball, table football and swings pour les enfants.

Local attractions

Make for the lake first to try out a nicely wide variety of watersports including swimming, sailing, canoeing and pedal boating, or stick to land in the countryside around Domaine de Chanteraine to have a go at horse riding, tennis or hiking. Many hikes are in the Verdon area, with some trails starting from the campsite entrance. We also recommend wanders around the villages of the Provence region, such as Moustiers, Sainte Marie, Tourtour, Aups and Villecroze, and delving into the area's culture at the Museum of Woodturners in Aiguines, the Museum of Prehistory of the Gorges du Verdon in Quinson and the ceramics museum in Salernes. And then there's that gorge. As well as the Museum of Prehistory, we highly recommend the Verdon Gorge's canyoning, its paragliding, its 1,500 or so climbing trails, its hiking and its fly fishing – although do spend a week or so gorged on all the options to pick your own very fave.
