Mountains in the distance

  • Peaceful Hautes-Alpes campsite with spectacular mountain views
  • Lac de Serre-Ponçon 25 minutes’ drive; Le Parcours des Fées 50 minutes
  • Kitchenette and hot showers; Embrun restaurants 15 minutes’ drive
When you’re chasing an adventure under canvas in a spectacular setting, campsites don’t come much more stunning than Pas de Côté. Set against the backdrop of jagged peaks in the Hautes-Alpes and five minutes’ drive from the alpine hamlet of Puy-Saint-Eusèbe, this spacious site serves up jumbo-sized meadow pitches and near-total silence alongside its gorgeous views. For anyone who loves being outdoors in fresh mountain air, this place is akin to paradise. The site is a springboard to swimming, canoeing and sailing expeditions on Lac de Serre-Ponçon (25 minutes’ drive), which is also just right for rambles around its perimeter with younger kids. For the more hardcore among you, there’s easy access to hiking, climbing and mountain-biking challenges in the Hautes-Alpes. It’s just as well that facilities on site include hot showers after all that strenuous activity. There’s also a communal kitchenette for rustling up simple camping meals, or alternatively – when you’re finally able to take your eyes off those views – you can head for historic hilltop Embrun (15 minutes) to try out all the restaurants or stock up on more foodie supplies from the supermarket.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Het prachtige uitzicht en de rust.

Disliked: De smalle weg ernaartoe. Wel prachtige uitzichten onderweg. Sanitair is primitief, maar dat heeft ook wel weer iets.

Local attractions

Kids will likely adore the waterslides and inflatable climbing course at Aquaparc Embrun (15 minutes’ drive), or running around among the treetops on the ropes courses at Arbraventure (55 minutes). If you catch any rainy days, head for interactive Muséoscope du Lac (half an hour), where you can all learn about the construction of the dam across Lac de Serre-Ponçon. Cross the arched Pont de Savines spanning the lake to set out on challenging alpine trails in Le Grand Clot (40 minutes) or Fontaine de l’Ours (half an hour) hiking areas. If you’d prefer to avoid a hard walk to see the spectacular Hautes-Alpes scenery, stay in the car and drive up to the lake-and-peaks viewing point at Belvédère St Vincent les Forts (50 minutes). Mix your outdoor activities in with a little cultural tourism and visit the peaceful wooden cloisters and simple nave of Abbaye Notre-Dame de Boscodon (50 minutes), or consider a trip to Le Parcours des Fées (50 minutes) to follow the wacky outdoor sculpture trail that wends its way through the Crévoux Valley.
