When peaceful holidays in rural Poitou-Charentes are called for, it’s hard to imagine a prettier spot to lay your head than Domaine Chantoiseau. Set in the heart of the Pays de la Loire, this glampsite has unusual and stylish accommodation in leafy parkland five minutes’ drive from the village of Saint-Pierre-des-Échaubrognes.
But just because it’s deep in the countryside doesn’t mean there’s nothing happening here. Quite the contrary in fact; kids will have a field day splashing up and down in the swimming pool or running around on the football field, while younger ones burn off energy on the bouncy castle and trampoline.
Families can bond over pétanque, shuffleboard, volleyball and badminton, try outdoor games like Jenga and Mölkky or settle down to leisurely afternoons of gentle rivalry while playing chess. Organised activities include quizzes and treasure hunts, and there’s live entertainment in the evening too, with poker or karaoke sessions and DJ sets.
As far as dining options go, spark up the barbecue for alfresco suppers or sample seasonal local dishes in La Pergola restaurant (open Wednesday to Sunday, please reserve tables in advance) if the idea of self-catering doesn’t appeal.

Local attractions
There’s masses to keep everyone entertained on site, but the siren call of Puy du Fou theme park (half an hour’s drive) will no doubt persuade you to spend the day watching thrilling historical pageants and raptor flying displays. Families are really well catered for in this corner of Poitou-Charentes; you can spot big cats, rhinos and giraffes at Bioparc de Doué-la-Fontaine (45 minutes), located in a former quarry, and the wacky 4D rides and IMAX movies of Futuroscope are 90 minutes away.
There are tropical gardens, interactive dinosaur encounters and a butterfly house to discover at Terra Botanica (an hour) – an ingenious botanical-themed version of Futuroscope – while the serene Japanese water gardens at Parc Oriental de Maulevrier (10 minutes) put on a colourful display all year around.
Anyone looking to get out into pristine nature can hire boats to paddle the waterways and look out for storks in the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park (about an hour). If you want to ramp up activity levels a bit, Lac du Verdon (15 minutes) is a popular watersports hub where you can hire all the gear for windsurfing, canoeing and kayaking.

Peter Pan 1 bedroom treehouse
Liked: Lovely family run place in the woods- plenty of games and activities for the children, so peaceful and the accommodation was all very unique and fun. We stayed in a treehouse.
Disliked: No place to do your washing up.
