  • A 15-minute drive to Verteuil-sur-Charente; 50 minutes to Futuroscope
  • Fresh breakfast pastries and communal dinner available; games on site
Heading down to the Med or looking to linger in the spectacular Poitou-Charentes countryside? Whether you’re just passing through (the N10 to Bordeaux is five minutes’ drive away) or intending to hang around for a few days, you’re guaranteed a warm welcome from the owners of Glamping Pays de Joie, a peaceful site on the outskirts of sleepy Montalembert village on the west coast of France between Bordeaux and Poitiers. Set in 1.5 hectares of privately owned woodland surrounding an historic farmhouse, all the accommodation is hidden away in grassy nooks and crannies among the trees for extra seclusion. Here you can kickback and enjoy the quiet, play pétanque with the kids and the traditional Flemish dice game of “pietjesbak”, walk any four-legged chums in the woods, or simply spend the afternoon reading a novel while swinging in a hammock. After a couple of days, you’ll be so chilled you won’t want to move. Luckily breakfast is taken care of with freshly baked croissants and baguettes available every morning, and if prepping meals seems like a step too far, no problem, you can join in with the shared set-menu supper (tables d'hotes) – dishes include paella – in the evening. And any musicians among you, do feel free to bring your instruments with you and join in with a spontaneous song or two around the campfire. Guests can also de-stress by walking with the site's pig.

Local attractions

When the kids hear about the 4D rides and IMAX screens at Futuroscope (50 minutes’ drive), you probably won’t get a moment’s peace until you agree to spend the day there. Animal-mad youngsters may well love the free-ranging primates at La Vallée des Singes monkey sanctuary (20 minutes), and you can sneak in a history lesson when visiting the Grottes du Chaffaud (15 minutes), where prehistoric bones and tools have been found. Need to work off energy? Head for the waterslides at lakeside Plan d’eau de Saint-Macoux (five minutes), or go kayaking on the Charente River from Ruffec (10 minutes). If you hit a rare cooler day, distract the kids with laps of the indoor pool at Oda Aquatic Centre (15 minutes). For a tour of Poitou-Charentes towns and villages start off in riverside Verteuil-sur-Charente (15 minutes), dominated by its castle, and then hit the 12th-century abbey and half-timbered houses of Nanteuil-en-Vallée (20 minutes). Historic Angoulême (45 minutes) is worth a day trip for its stunning medieval architecture, while Poitiers (50 minutes) has an ancient baptistry, gothic-era cathedral and works by Rodin in the Musée Sainte-Croix.
