Grab your top-notch location ticksheet… Charente site Camping de Baignes, on the banks of the Paraon river, is a place that’s likely to rack up plenty of points for position.
For starters, there's ease of access from the motorway to here – weary drivers making their way cross country between Paris and Bordeaux need only take a short detour from the RN10 to get to this peaceful, family-friendly site. Once installed, those same drivers can afford to leave the car in place for a little while, as the site’s on the edge of the village of Baignes-Sainte-Radegonde, and within easy ambling distance of shops, a supermarket, a bank and a good handful of cafés, bars and restaurants.
Fancy a game of tennis? Or a swim, perhaps? No need to go far in search of these either – simply stroll across the road to the local park, where there’s an open-air pool, a playground and a couple of tennis courts to bop balls about on.
And if you’ve got sights set on more ambitious plans to fill your days, this is a handy spot for such things too – a safari park, lake beach and waterpark are all within a 20-minute drive, and a voie verte cycleway is a kilometre away for traffic-free trips by bike. Angoulême, Cognac and Bordeaux are all within an hour’s drive for town wanders (or tasting local tipples, if you’re travelling without tiddlers in tow).

Local attractions
Up for some aquatic activity? Pack your swimmers for outings to the lakes in Brossac (20 minutes’ drive) – one has soft sands for sunbathing and calm water for peaceful paddles and swims, while the other’s dedicated to more action-packed pursuits including jetskiing and screaming down the waterslide.
There are more waterslides to wend your way down at Les Antilles de Jonzac (20 minutes), along with a spa and sauna for grownups to sneak off to; and, although you can’t jump in, you should certainly set out to see the incredible bright waters of the blue ponds in Touvérac (five minutes).
If you’re looking to get out into the wild, set off to see the creatures that live at Upper Saintonge Safari Park (15 minutes). For something more cultured, aim for the troglodyte church in Aubeterre-sur-Dronne (40 minutes), Château de Chalais (half an hour) or the historic streets of Angoulême (40 minutes).
