  • Laidback glamping site by the beach at the tip of Île de Ré
  • Phare des Baleines and Ars-en-Ré both 10 minutes away by bike
  • Restaurant-bar, bike hire, kids' club and games on site
Île de Ré is well known as a gorgeous place for a laidback holiday – but things get even more chilled out at Kampaoh Côte Sauvage. This stylish glamping site is right up at the far end of the island in the little fishing village of Saint-Clément-des-Baleines, so it's as remote and relaxed as can be. That location makes this a gorgeous spot for a quiet coastal getaway, with lots of beaches, salt marshes, maritime pine forests, walking trails and bike paths to explore nearby. Ars-en-Ré (10 minutes' drive), Saint-Martin-de-Ré (20 minutes) and La Flotte (half an hour) are all close by for colourful street markets and seafood restaurants. You don't have to go that far for eats, however – there’s a restaurant-bar on site, with outdoor seating for alfresco meals, and a supermarket for your self-catering supplies. Other facilities here are geared towards keeping you happily busy throughout your stay with games of pétanque and volleyball and kids' club activities for younger guests. Direct access to the coast also means you'll be able to get out onto the long sandy beach for a walk, a swim and some sunbathing whenever you fancy it. One thing you won't have to dedicate any time to is getting your tent set up – here you'll be moving into a tent that's already set up and waiting for your arrival, with beds made up and all sorts of handy furnishings provided. Bike hire and a launderette on site should also help you to travel light.

Local attractions

This part of the island really lends itself to exploring on foot, by bike or on horseback – there are a couple of stables nearby for the last of these. Any of these outings might take you up to the very tip of the island at Phare des Baleines, to the long swathe of sand at Conche des Baleines or for a tour of the Lilleau des Niges salt marshes. Ars-en-Ré and Les Portes-en-Ré (both 10 minutes' drive) are both good places to find some of the seafood that the island is famed for. A little further away, Saint-Martin-de-Ré (20 minutes) is known for its donkeys wearing trousers and its UNESCO-listed 17th-century citadel; after your visit, travel along the coast to Fort La Prée (half an hour) to learn more about the island's military heritage. Although you're likely to want to spend most of your time here exploring the island, it's worth planning to dedicate a little bit of time to La Rochelle, back on the mainland (50 minutes). Here you can visit the aquarium, tour the historic towers and explore various museums as well as finding lots of good things to eat.
