  • Family-friendly site opposite the beach in Port-des-Barques
  • Within an hour's drive of Oléron island, Royan and La Rochelle
  • Swimming pool, restaurant and summer activities for all ages
What a cracking coastal spot this is – if you’re the sort that seeks out lots of seaside days on hols you’ve found a great base at Camping La Garenne. The jaunt to the nearest beach from this Port-des-Barques site involves simply nipping across the road, and you’ll also be within easy reach of lots more Charente-Maritime faves, including Royan, La Rochelle and Oléron island. Pile on top of that coastal hikes, watersports, boat trips, museums, an aquarium and a zoo (and more beaches, bien sûr) and you’ll note that it’s a wise move to plump for as lengthy a stay as possible at this place. And it’s an equally wise move to factor in a bit of flopping-out time between your days out (all those fun times can get terribly tiring…) Poolside is probably the place to be for that – there are plenty of loungers gathered on the sun terrace for sunbathing between swims, and supervising the small sorts as they splash in the paddling pool. Pétanque courts and a playground take care of times when you’d rather stay dry, and there’s a whole heap of activities to pick from in summer: crafts, sports and outings cater for kids, teens and grownups through the day, while the evenings are filled with quizzes, movies and showing off your grooviest dad dancing moves at the disco. Scheduling a bit of time for dining is a fine plan too – settle in for meals at the site’s restaurant, wander up to the village centre in 15 minutes for restaurants and bakeries or sort supplies at the supermarket 10 minutes’ drive away in Soubise.

What customers say

This campsite boasts a tranquil, family-friendly vibe with spacious, shaded sites. Its beach proximity and Île Madame access are big draws. Guests rave about staff, the pool, and kids' activities. Downsides include outdated restrooms needing upgrades, with some closed. Spotty sanitation cleanliness, missing toilet paper, and occasional noise issues are also mentioned.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked The site was just what we were looking for, clean, shady for the dogs and close to the beach.
It could do with some updating in the toilets/shower blocks, but apart from that was perfect!

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked The campsite is in a great location – right by the beach and within walking distance of the town center with restaurants and shops. The area is mostly wooded, which provides shade and a pleasant atmosphere. The pitches are spacious and well-maintained.
Cleanliness was a big plus, as well as the large dishwashing area (outdoors but covered) and the nice, individual showers. Wi-Fi worked perfectly. The pool area looked nice, although we didn’t use it. The reception staff were friendly and helpful

Disliked The pitches could be better separated – people often took a shortcut through our space, which was quite annoying.
The toilets were the biggest downside: poorly maintained, cramped, and very dark (especially the ones near the reception and at the far end of the campsite). The washroom areas were also very dark, and there was no toilet paper or hand soap provided.
The internal roads leading to the pitches were in poor condition – in some spots, tree roots had pushed through the asphalt so badly that it was impossible to drive through without scraping the car. Anyone with a low vehicle should be extra careful.
Behind the campsite there’s a bar with live music – unfortunately the noise continued even after 10 PM. If you're looking for peace and quiet, avoid the pitches at the back of the campsite.
Directional signs on the campsite were confusing and sometimes misleading. A smaller downside: there’s no on-site shop or food stand, which would have been convenient.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked Fantastic location.

Disliked Unfortunately campsite was in poor state of neglect, all pitches overgrown, signs etc leaning against trees or missing, fire hydrants missing from their bags.
NO on site restaurant open whatsoever!
No entertainment on site despite “Animations” advertised.
I was informed by a British retired couple who stayed there that ownership has recently changed hands, restaurants have been annexed off as is obvious as campsite fencing wraps around them so no access from campsite but access from road which is a considerable walk.
We had booked for seven nights but abandoned those plans after four nights and moved on to a lovely campsite again recommended by Pitchup .com.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked A very spacious pitch. The toilet block was clean and the reception staff helpful.I did not use yhe pool so I cannot comment other to say it looked very nice. The restaurant/bar was a 20 minute walk however well worth it especially the fish in a tomato sauce.

Disliked Certain areas were tied but this was not too much of a problem.

Local attractions

If you’ve brought bikes, take them over to Oléron island. There’s a fab network of cycle paths over here, linking villages, beaches and salt marshes, and they’re generally mercifully flat and quiet. It’ll take around 45 minutes to drive there; for an island escape closer to home, wander over to L’Isle Madame in half an hour. Sealife enthusiasts have much more to see than just beaches around here: La Corderie Royale in Rochefort (25 minutes’ drive) now houses the International Centre of the Sea, and you can board the old boat Hermione for a taste of life at sea. Should your interests lie more in life beneath the waves, take the 45-minute drive to the aquarium in La Rochelle, where more than 12,000 aquatic animals dwell in the tanks. To see landlubbing creatures instead, set off for a similar length of journey south to Zoo de la Palmyre, set across a splendid 18 hectares of pine forest.
