  • Family-friendly caravan site near Péronne in the Somme Valley
  • A 15-minute drive to the Museum of the Great War in Péronne
  • Games, play area and fishing on site; near the Somme Battlefields
A handy base for exploring the WWI sites of northern France, Garden Roses - Camping des Rosiers is a touring site located in Curlu, a small and rural village in the Picardy region. It has a wonderfully peaceful setting on neatly landscaped and private green pitches separated by hedgerows. It’s all too easy to keep everybody occupied on this family-friendly site, which has a play area where toddlers can let off steam, ping-pong tables for older kids to challenge new-found pals to games, and the opportunity to go coarse fishing at the on-site pond for all keen anglers. A stay here puts you close to Péronne (10 minutes’ drive), one of the leading destinations for remembrance tourism in connection with the Great War, but if you’d rather concentrate on getting out and about in the fresh air, activities within half an hour’s drive of the campsite include kayaking, dinghy sailing, walking and biking.

Local attractions

The Somme Valley is awash with meandering rivers as well as ponds and canals just waiting for anglers to set up their lines. You can also hike and cycle on quiet waterside trails or try your hand at kayaking on the River Somme (15 minutes’ drive). If you’re after light-hearted fun to have with the kids, jump on the Véloroute steam train (15 minutes) that runs between Péronne (10 minutes) and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme (an hour and a half), or treat them to a day out at Samara Arboretum (45 minutes), where they can observe people living as Stone Age villagers and join in practising their crafts. Medieval Péronne still bears the scars of the Great War, and in particular the Battle of the Somme. Learn all about this epic struggle at the Museum of the Great War in the Château de Péronne, and then take a guided tour of the Somme Battlefields (20 minutes). If you’d rather do a self-driving tour, the Remembrance Circuit runs from Péronne to Albert (15 minutes) and takes in cemeteries and memorials as well as former battlefields where red poppies bloom every spring.

Liked: The owner is a very kind and helpful man. We arrived 2 hours late as our car had broken down. He left a private party to show us our pitch and couldn't do enough to help us.

Disliked: Nothing

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Very welcoming! This is a small site, but, as a solo female traveller, I felt safe and secure. In fact, I felt very “at home” I had a wonderful pitch, flat, with ehu and a water tap. And a nice shady tree to sit under on those very warm days! The site is made up largely of statics, with a few tent, motorhome or caravan pitches. Les sanitaires are typically French. No music, no need for a curfew as the residents naturally remained quiet. The location may seem a little out of the way, but for anyone wishing to explore WW1 cemeteries, it is an ideal spot - you are right in the Somme Valley, just a few miles from Thiepval, and there are a number of cemeteries within a few miles. I really enjoyed my stay here and would definitely recommend it!

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Cheap(ish). Had a shaded pitch, think it was the only shady pitch for tourers. Shower block was ok. Very peaceful and quiet. Handy for WW1 sites.

Disliked: Electric supply was unreliable. Non-existent wifi and poor 4g signal. Cold water only in all sinks. No nearby shops or facilities apart from one small local bar. Not a dislike but an observation, very few touring pitches, seems to be used for one night stops in the main, not much interaction with other campers.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite
