  • Large pitches at a 200-hectare estate near Saint-Julien-des-Landes
  • A 15-minute drive to the Vendée beaches; 55 minutes to Puy du Fou
  • Pool complex, lagoon beach, restaurant and lots of activities on site
Seeking some space to relax? You’ll certainly have plenty of that at Camping La Garangeoire – this Vendée site is part of a 200-hectare estate five minutes’ drive from Saint-Julien-des-Landes, with a rather magnificent historic house at its centre. The large size of the site means plenty of space to spread out on all the pitches, and it also means plenty of facilities for guests. The estate has been welcoming guests since way back in 1964, and in the intervening years the owners have continued to add more and more extras so they can now boast pretty much everything you’d want from a holiday location. On the entertainment front, that means a heated outdoor pool complex (with slides, a paddling pool and various activities including water polo and night swims), a sauna and massage room, two tennis courts, a football pitch, miniature golf, playgrounds, fishing ponds, an outdoor fitness area and trampolines. And that’s not all… there are also daily activities for kids and adults alike (including archery sessions, yoga and football training), plus bike hire, pedal go-kart hire, nature walks and a horse riding centre for kids’ pony rides, adult lessons and trail rides in the forest. And even that’s not all… because you’ll probably also want to leave some time for the beach area, which has a lovely lagoon that goes to a maximum depth of 90cm and is just the place for taking the kids for a safe paddle or swim. Meanwhile, when it comes to the essentials, there are plenty of those around too: the site has a restaurant, bar, wine bar, takeaway, supermarket, launderettes, electric vehicle charging… and a reception area with friendly staff who can help sort anything not on the list.

Castels suite FHU grass campsite (Private restroom amenities, premium)

Liked: The size of pitch and the toilet/kitchenette block were great. Meant we didnt have to take as much equipment. Friendlyness of staff

Disliked: Evening entertainment could have been better. A quiz for Friday night entertainment. That dhould be lunchtime at best. Other services seem to close just as you need them. Shop closed for too long each day. Take-away service should be open later. But did a great burger! Cycle hire closed between 12:30 - 5:00 on a Monday. Restaurant only open 2 hours. Clearer directions to the site from Saint-Julien-des-Landed

Powered grass campsite (classic)

Liked: Loved this site so much. So much to do or you can just chill. Lovely and clean, lovely staff, suitable for all age of children. Different daily entertainment for everyone. Lovely restaurant and takeaway venue. Clean big pitches. Great toilets and showers. The lagoon was a nice treat if you wanted a change up from the 4 swimming pools. Go karts, pony trekking, kids club, football clubs, pédalos, kayaks and much more! 20mins from lovely beaches.15 mins from a super U or lidal! Loved it!

Disliked: We did the pony trek and the cheeky pony wouldn’t move at all- not a campsite problem but funny and a bit frustrating 😂. Mens shower cleaning was a bit sporadic - so hard to know the routine to time going to the showers - but honestly this is being super picky- we loved it!

Local attractions

If you’re coming to the Vendée it’s likely that you’d like to spend some time at the beach. The easiest way to do that is to hop on the shuttle bus that runs to local beaches once a week in summer. If you’d rather travel under your own steam, it’s a 15-minute drive to Bretignolles-sur-Mer, or just under half an hour to Saint Gilles Croix de Vie or Les Sables d’Olonne. There are plenty of activities to try over at the beaches – and in the local area too. There’s a circuit of five golf courses around the park, plus go-karting at Circuit Mecamax (20 minutes’ drive), walks and bike rides at Lac de Jaunay (10 minutes) and aerial adventures at Le Grand Défi (five minutes). If you’re after a full-on family day out, plan a trip to Puy du Fou (55 minutes) – the history-inspired theme park is packed with rides, activities and shows so you’ll easily fill a day there with the kids.
