  • Small, sociable site in the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park
  • Boat trips 10 minutes' drive away; an hour to the coast or Puy du Fou
  • Shared kitchen/dining area on site; hiking/bike maps to borrow
Green will certainly be the background colour for your break at Les Prairies de Pacouinay – this Vendée site is surrounded by the lush scenery of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park, a place nicknamed ‘La Venise Verte’ for the gondolas and other boats that make their way along the huge network of waterways. Getting out to see this stunning scenery should be simple – you’ll be 10 minutes' drive from a pier with boat tours, and the site owner has a collection of favourite walking and cycling trails to try out. There are a couple of bikes available to hire on site, but they’re often booked so it’s best to bring your own if you can (or check on availability ahead of arrival). Horse riding, fishing and lake swimming are among the other activity options nearby and there are plenty of other things to do, including visiting heritage buildings or taking a stroll around the historical town of Niort. If you don’t mind a slightly longer drive, you can get to the coast and the city of La Rochelle with a journey of around an hour. Back on site, you’ll be staying at a peaceful but friendly site, where guests have access to a fully equipped kitchen (with fridge, cooker and dishwasher) that also has tables for sociable meals. Other facilities include a barbecue area, a washing machine and a bathroom with toilet and shower.

Powered grass campsite

Liked A wonderful, quirky stop-over. Anne, the Host, was very welcoming and friendly. The social barn which is a fully equipped kitchen, was a great place to cook, share wine and spend the evening talking to fellow campers. Anne share a glass of a local aperitif with us - delightful! Facilities are spotlessly clean and again, quirky! Pick figs and walnuts from the trees and talk to the chickens if you feel inclined. Would like to stay longer but hopefully, next time.

Local attractions

To see some of the surroundings, you’ll be able to join boat trips or hire canoes and kayaks at Pier of the Green Venice (10 minutes’ drive). Local activity providers organise bike and ATV tours as well, or you can follow one of the trails suggested by the team on site. For a cool dip after your tour, head to the beach area at Lake Chassenon (15 minutes). Historical buildings are dotted around here too – learn about the area’s past at House of the Marais Poitevin (15 minutes) or pay visits to Abbey Nieul-sur-l’Autise (10 minutes), Abbey Maillezais (15 minutes) and Château du Coudray-Salbart (25 minutes). Niort (20 minutes) is worth a trip too, to visit the Musée Bernard d’Agesci, the Donjon de Niort and the popular covered market. A little further afield, it’s an hour’s drive to La Rochelle or just a little longer to the beach at La Tranche-sur-Mer. The hugely popular theme park Puy du Fou is about an hour’s drive away as well.
