Beach holiday, elegant resort break or holiday fun with the kids? No need to choose at Camping le Moulin de la Salle, because you can happily do all three. Centred upon a restored windmill, this family-friendly Vendée site is 10 minutes’ drive from Atlantic beaches and from lively seaside Les Sables-d’Olonne… and has spacious caravan accommodation and all sorts of facilities on site to keep everybody entertained for weeks. Chances are the kids will be drawn to the pool complex like moths to a light – there’s a heated indoor pool, exercise classes, waterslides and a lazy river, as well as a toddler pool and a wide sun deck for basking under the Vendée sun. Younger children can have a good time at the playground and you can all get together to kick a ball around on the multisports field or get gently competitive on the pétanque court. Plenty extra takes place during July and August, including a kids’ club, daytime and evening entertainment for all ages and wellness massages for anyone feeling a bit under par. Should you have a yen to swim in the Bay of Biscay, catch the shuttle that runs between the campsite and sandy Sauveterre Beach (10 minutes, it has lifeguards in summer). Life is made easy for grown ups on site too. While there are fully equipped kitchens in the caravans, the site also has a takeaway restaurant, licensed bar and grocery shop selling all the basics, fresh bread and breakfast favourites like croissants and pains au chocolat.

Local attractions

Days out with the kids your main concern? Start with a trip to the Zoo des Sables-d’Olonnes (15 minutes’ drive), where endangered cheetahs and red pandas are housed in spacious enclosures mirroring their natural habitats. The enchanting Museum du Coquillage (five minutes) should fascinate most youngsters with its collection of seashells, fragile corals and stuffed sharks. There are more aquatic beasts (these ones very much alive) from rays to colourful clown fish to be seen at the Aquarium de Vendée (20 minutes), and the whole family can learn about the life of bees and the honey-making process at the interactive Folie de Finfarine (25 minutes). And that’s all before you’ve even set foot on a Vendée beach. You can go rock pooling with the kids and watch spectacular sunsets at Sauveterre Beach (10 minutes), or get the kids up on a surfboard off Plage des Dunes (15 minutes). Les Sables-d’Olonne’s Grande Plage (10 minutes) is a popular spot with lots of facilities and a choice of restaurants and cafés along its seafront promenade.
