  • Spacious eco-friendly Creole-style lodges in the Marais Poitevin
  • La Rochelle, Puy du Fou and Futuroscope within an hour's drive
  • Well-equipped lodges with ensuite bathroom and private plunge pool
The Marais Poitevin or Martinique? You may feel like you’ve been whisked well away from the shores of France when you stay at Le Carbet Vendéen, where you’ll be staying in ‘Marais-Cases’ designed in the style of Creole houses. Choosing these unusual accommodations was a nod to the past for owners Sonia and Edouard, who met in the West Indies and wanted to offer guests the chance to experience a Caribbean vibe without flying overseas. The wooden lodges also fit with their eco-friendly ethos, as they’re energy efficient, long lasting and built from sustainable materials. Staying in a sturdy wooden structure is also a bonus for guests, as they’re sturdy, weatherproof and easy to keep at a good temperature, staying fairly cool in summer and retaining heat well on cooler days. They’re spacious, too – each lodge has two bedrooms, a bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen as well as a living space to relax in. Or perhaps you’d rather relax outside… it’s certainly possible, as each lodge has its own terrace and garden space with a barbecue, table and chairs and private plunge pool. Benet (10 minutes’ drive) has shops and a supermarket for all your food and drinks. Despite the laidback Caribbean vibe, you’re firmly in France’s Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park here, giving you easy access to things like hikes, horse riding, fishing and boat trips. The Vendée coast isn’t far off either, and you can throw in day trips to popular attractions like Puy du Fou or Futuroscope.

Local attractions

You should surely start with some time spent exploring the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park. There are lots of great walking trails around, and Centre Équestre de la Tour 85 (10 minutes’ walk) has a range of horse riding activities, from beginner lessons and carriage rides to longer hacks for experienced riders. You can hire boats from Embarcadère de la Venise Verte (10 minutes’ drive) and it’s also possible to fish in the canals if you have the right licence. Head towards the coast and it’ll take you about 45 minutes in the car to reach La Rochelle, where you can visit the aquarium and maritime museum, hit the beach or try various activities including jetskiing and parasailing. There are also boat trips to the Île de Ré and Fort Boyard. If you’re on a family holiday, you may well want to plan full days out that everyone should enjoy. If that’s the case, there are two great options about an hour’s drive away. Futuroscope is absolutely jam packed with state-of-the art rides and shows (with an aquapark for added fun), while Puy du Fou looks to the past for its spectacular history-themed shows.
