- Grass pitches near the river Loire, a 20-minute drive from Ancenis
- Panorama on the Loire 10 minutes’ drive; Nantes 40 minutes
- Dogs welcome; playground; directly on the Loire à Vélo cycle route
Cycling, fishing and sipping wine is not too shabby a way to spend your holidays, right? If you like the sound of all that, it might be time to head to Camping Les Grenettes, a peaceful site on the south bank of the river Loire, a 20-minute drive from the historic town of Ancenis, with its medieval fortress.
Set up on a level grass pitch shaded by tall trees (electric hook-up is available for an additional fee), then find your bearings around the site, locating the playground, with its swing and slide; and amenities such as toilet/shower block (complete with facilities for disabled guests), washing-up area and drying room.
After that, it’s time to head out to explore the local area with your faithful canine companion in tow – or on two wheels, if you prefer: you are on the Loire à Vélo here, a long-distance cycle route that takes in riverside towns, spectacular viewpoints (like the Panorama on the Loire – 10 minutes, or 20 minutes by bike) and splendid vineyards.
Speaking of which, you might want to book a visit at places like Domaine Merceron and Romain Moreau (both five minutes’ drive or a 15-minute bike ride) so you can take part in a Muscadet tasting session… If you prefer hops to grapes, Brasserie Will’s (five minutes, or 10 minutes by bike) is a microbrewery serving artisanal beers and running workshops.

Local attractions
In a former chestnut grove surrounded by vineyards, the Espace zoologique de La Boissière-du-Doré (20 minutes' drive) is home to orangutans, giraffes, tigers and bears among other animals. Les Machines de l'Île in Nantes (40 minutes) is an amusement park with steam punk-inspired rides like the Carrousel of the Marine Worlds, plus imposing mechanical creatures such as Le Grand Éléphant, which sometimes goes walkabout around the site, carrying visitors and spraying water from its trunk.
In Angers (one hour), the château sits on the south bank of the river Maine. Take in the splendid views of the city from its battlements, then head inside to check out the vast Apocalypse Tapestry. The Cathédrale Saint-Maurice was built over several centuries and its architecture includes elements ranging from the Romanesque to the Baroque.
