  • Small family-run site with three ponds in the peaceful countryside
  • A five-minute drive to a Japanese garden; half an hour from Puy du Fou
  • Watersports and fishing on site; wide variety of games; animals
If someone asked you to imagine a small, friendly site in the countryside of France, you might come up with something quite close to Les Logis de L’Oumois in Pays de la Loire. The Beaudoin family (Lydie, Nathalie and their parents) designed this site just as they like their own holidays – family-friendly and in the countryside. On site, there are fishing ponds, peaceful birdsong and walks. On your wanderings, keep your eyes peeled for the site’s chickens and cows, as well as Chouquette the donkey, Pompon the pony and Léon the peacock. Otherwise, get stuck into the watersports, which include boating, canoeing and pedal boats (all free of charge). The games room is kitted out with billiards, table football, table tennis, wooden games and darts, while outdoors, there are high-season activities like inflatable structures, a trampoline, a multi-sports field and a treasure hunt based around the ponds. You should have built up a healthy appetite with all of those activities. Handily, there are barbecues on site and shops and restaurants within a 20-minute walk or a five-minute drive of the site in Saint-Pierre-des-Échaubrognes. The site also has a washing machine for any dirty laundry. When you’re eventually ready to explore outside of the site, make your way to Parc Oriental de Maulévrier five minutes' drive away, which is a huge Japanese garden which was originally planted in the early 20th century, and then restored. One of France’s most popular theme parks, Puy du Fou, is half an hour’s drive away.

Local attractions

Fond of a stroll after lunch? There are a couple of very splendid places for such things nearby. Verdon Lake (five to 10 minutes’ drive) and Lac de Ribou (10 minutes) have splendid views, and if you haven’t eaten yet, pack a picnic. There’s no shortage of stunning scenery in this area, as you will quickly learn in the village of Aubigné-sur-Layon (35 minutes) in the Layon Valley which has a walled castle with parts from the 12th to 15th century and Clisson (45 minutes) which has a ruined castle, a 15th-century market and a scattering of Italian architecture. That may be enough ruined castles for one trip, but if not, add Château de Bressuire (25 minutes) to your list. Cholet (15 minutes) is one of the closest towns to the site; it has an art and history museum and a Textile and Fashion Museum (20 minutes). Driving a bit further away will get you to another stunning sightseeing spot, as Nantes (an hour) on the river Loire has a medieval castle with a museum about the city.
