When everyone’s batteries are running on low, you’ll be needing somewhere nice and quiet to retreat to, with a family vibe and a fair amount of physical stuff to do on site so the kids are happy. It’s time to consider Domaine de l’Entrelacs, a small, laidback and family-friendly Maine-et-Loire spot in five hectares of greenery overlooking Lac de Ribou at La Tessoualle . All the accommodation is neatly set in private gardens surrounded by hedges and mature trees, and deck chairs, outdoor furniture and gas barbecues are provided to help you make the most of your alfresco time. Amenities to keep everyone active include a heated swimming pool (open May to September), a play area, ping-pong table and pétanque court. You can also follow the Ribou’cle hiking trail around the lake, go geocaching, go sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, wild swimming… you get the picture. In the evening, the informal La Tourelle du Lac pub opens up as a licensed bar with organic food trucks and all manner of entertainment from DJs, bands and cabarets. Should you be needing any further distractions, the site is 15 minutes’ drive from shops and cafés in Cholet, and half an hour from Puy du Fou theme park.

Local attractions

If kids are with you, you’ll get no peace until they get to Puy du Fou theme park (half an hour’s drive), famed for its alfresco historical shows with a cast of thousands of people and animals. Chances are the hair-raising waterslides at O’Gliss Park (an hour) will also go down a storm with families, along with the 4D odysseys and interactive shows at Terra Botanica (50 minutes). There are gorgeous Japanese gardens to be wandered at Parc Oriental de Maulévrier (10 minutes), and a brace of elegant local châteaux to visit too: 12th-century Tiffauges (half an hour) holds jousting and battle reenactments in summer, while the medieval castle at Clisson (45 minutes) has a pretty setting on the River Loire. The Maine-et-Loire region also has more than its fair share of beguiling cities, three of which are about an hour’s drive away. Day trips might take in the troglodyte houses and hilltop castle at Saumur, or the medieval architecture and fine Gothic cathedral in Angers. Head for Nantes to ride on the giant mechanical elephant at Les Machines de l’île – to avoid disappointment, book tickets well before your visit.
