  • Scenic site by a small lake in the Brière Regional Natural Park
  • Half an hour from Saint-Nazaire and the Atlantic coast
  • Free fishing, pool, playgrounds, playroom, restaurant and shop
Free fishing, anyone? How about free fishing in a green and scenic setting around a serene and scenic lake… in a wildlife haven in the Brière Regional Natural Park? All the above, stacks of space and a family-friendly vibe are at the Loire-Atlantique's Camping Le Deffay, on a comely estate owned by generations of the same family since the 19th century. The park is by a small lake for catch and release fishing, birdwatching, nature spotting and general idling, and is among quiet paths and small roads for strolls among the surrounding greenery. When you're ready to venture further, it's 10 minutes' drive from here to Pontchateau, 50 minutes to Nantes, and half an hour to both Guérande and the spectacular and world-famed bay of La Baule. During your lengthy and lazy days on site, a covered pool is to hand to start off your day swimmingly, alongside a paddling pool to entertain the kids and a sun terrace by both pools for those who prefer to bask. Some waterside time should then beckon before a spot of activity at the lakeside fitness area or taking the kids along to the playgrounds or indoor playground. And as you'll need fuel after that, how handy that there's a swish restaurant on site with indoor and outdoor seating... and a grocery shop and bread ordering service for supplies, brekkie and picnics.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Setting, although not the nearby road noise. Pitches large and flat. Attractive lake although not sure how clean it was.

Disliked: A lovely site, in season we guess, as we felt that by September (our visit) the owners were not as welcoming as one might hope for to ensure everything went well. The sanitary blocks really let this place down. No toilet paper in the men’s, and broken/missing toilet seats, bins not emptied, etc. The men’s block was actually locked for a couple of days while we were there… Showers passable, not the hottest of water temperatures. Cubicles would be vastly improved with more hooks and benches on which to place belongings/get dressed again without everything getting soaked! There was a new shower block which remained locked….. also a separate washing up area in the conservatory was locked so all that had to be done in sinks in the laundry room. Automatic lights a good idea but not when they keep turning off when you are in there! No wifi as advertised, apparently due to a recent storm. Roads had potholes. Kept awake our first night by a wedding in the nearby chateau - load thumping music went on until 4am. We accept that, but an apologetic/fair warning notice from the management would have been appreciated - noise is so much more noticeable through thin tent walls!

FHU grass and earth travel trailer campsite

FHU grass and earth travel trailer campsite

Liked: The campsite is located in the grounds of beautiful rural manor house. The ‘super’ pitches are excellent with stunning lakeside views with water and electricity on the pitch. There is a nice lake at the centre of the camping pitches and well kept trees and garden areas. The bar and restaurant is excellent with friendly staff. We had fish and chips which was excellent. The pool was large enough to swim lengths and a pleasant temperature. The exercise area had numerous exercise machines to work out.

Disliked: The shower and toilet block. It really is quite tired and is need of updating. In the men’s block the drain lids were lifting out of place in one of the shower cubicles and sharp tiles were completely dislodged causing a sharp hazard to feet. The toilets have broken or missing toilet seats and on several occasions there was no toilet roll. No hand soap at sinks for washing hands properly. Note to owners : please help your business by upgrading your shower and toilet facilities urgently because this is sadly letting your beautiful site down and this is something that your customers will really appreciate. When visiting a camping site, it is very important to appreciate that customers really appreciate a very clean and modern shower and toilet facility and this can make or break a holiday.

Liked: Pitches were well serviced some with electric and water. Massive pitches and some right next to lake. Pool was excellent with plenty of loungers and parasols. Little extras for kids with playground, trampolines, sports nets, games room and bouncy castles. Nice little bar and opportunity to order fresh bread. We left and actually came back 2 days later because we loved it so much!

Local attractions

Boat and barge trips, salt marsh strolls, horse riding and carriage rides are all easily arranged around the surrounding Brière Regional Natural Park, along with guided hikes from May to October. Drive south for 30 minutes to reach either more salt marshes at Guérande or (and?) the stunning bay and beach at La Baule, often hailed as the most handsome in the world. An acclaimed golf course is at La Baule too if it's teeing off you're after, and more are at La Bretesche and Savenay 10 and 20 minutes' drive away. The shipbuilding town and big harbour of Saint-Nazaire (30 minutes) is also worth a look, and if you're on hol with the little squirts they'll probably like a day at the Océarium in Croisic, reachable within 50 minutes' drive.
