  • Riverside campsite 20 minutes’ walk from the centre of Clisson
  • Vineyards 10 minutes’ drive; Nantes 35 minutes; Puy du Fou 45 minutes
  • Bread delivery service and essentials store; riverside walks from site
You really should never be short of things to do and see when booking into Camping Le Moulin in the department of Loire-Atlantique. There are Muscadet vineyards to tour and wines to taste (and perchance to buy) within 10 minutes’ drive, the myriad attractions of Nantes (35 minutes), and historical extravaganzas at Puy du Fou (45 minutes) to marvel at. But if you don’t want to wander so far from your pitch, it's good to know that the tree-shaded campsite overlooks the Sèvre Nantaise river and has access to riverside strolls. It's a 20-minute walk from the centre of the medieval town of Clisson. You’d never know it from the peace that prevails on site, but it’s only a convenient 20 minutes’ walk from shops and restaurants, which you can reach along the riverbanks and a 45-minute walk from Moulin du Liveau in Gorges. Handily available on site, however, are pastries, croissants and bread at reception every morning (please put your order in the night before), and a small store selling snacks and basics (including Muscadet wine, of course). Round and about the site are a playground for younger guests, a pétanque field for family games and a communal relaxation room with ping-pong tables, table football and a TV for your downtime. And one final thing – cyclists attempting the Loire à Vélo can overnight at Camping Le Moulin safe in the knowledge that their wheels are securely stowed away in the site’s bike locker.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Friendly welcome and convenient location, could choose pitch

Disliked: Showers and toilets shut for the whole afternoons. No toilet seats. Acorns falling on motor home are very noisy- luckily we managed to grab the last pitch not under the trees.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: We stayed here for 1 night prior to our morning ferry from Saint-malo. Location, 10 minutes walk to village with restaurants and usual shops 25 minute bike ride to a beautiful beach, lively area with loads of restaurants. Very professional site, free WiFi, pool, shop, snack bar. We had a huge pitch which was perfect. Toilets and showers spotless.

Disliked: Nothing

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: We liked being able to choose our own pitch and chose one that overlooked an open space with trees etc. The site was nice and quiet too. There was a supermarket within a few minutes walk away. The shower blocks were clean with an adequate number too.

Disliked: We didn’t like the fact that the toilets didn’t have any seats on them plus I found this not ideal when using the disabled toilet even when using the handrail as my balance isn’t good! I also had an issue with the disabled shower as the button was difficult to press for long enough to have the water to come out to wash myself with and to reach plus balance myself as it was the wrong height to reach from the chair provided! Perhaps the disabled facilities need to be reviewed? The water vending machine outside the site wasn’t working so we were unable to put any water in our motorhome and toilet after it had been emptied! We have a motorhome and therefore the facilities were not functioning for us! For the price we paid - motorhome facilities not properly available/working, no WiFi available even though it was advertised. Unable to check in until 3pm when around that time the toilets/showers are closed until 5.30pm for cleaning!

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Great for a stopover, which is what we tend to do whilst touring around France. The greeting was pleasant and easy. Choice of what pitch we wanted. Hot showers. Close to a very large hypermarket within walking distance.

Disliked: Toilet and shower block dated and a little grubby. Free WiFi but couldn’t connect any devices to it.

Liked: Good location walking distance to Clisson historical centre and near to the river. Large supermarket within few minutes walk. Shower blocks clean and adequate number of showers for site . Hot water. Reception staff friendly

Disliked: Unable to check u til 3 pm. Water vending machine outside site not working although staff allowed us to fill up elsewhere. Not many staff on site so often reception not manned and shower block closed for several hours for cleaning although there was a toilet available to use by reception

Local attractions

Hit Clisson, its ramparts and 19th-century Italianate monuments in mid-June and you’ll catch Hellfest Summer Open Air, the celebrated heavy-metal music festival. If you’re into rather more sedate ways of passing your time, there are several hiking trails within 10 minutes’ walk of the campsite. You can also hire canoes and kayaks (10 minutes’ drive) to paddle along the Sèvre Nantaise river. Most people will fall in love with the action-filled shows at Puy du Fou (45 minutes), with casts of thousands including animals and birds – it’s worth staying on after dark to witness the daily fireworks extravaganza. More unusual treats for all the family lie in store in Nantes (35 minutes). Book ahead for a walk atop the giant mechanical elephant at Les Machines de l’Île, and have a wander among the waterfalls and tropical palms at the Jardin Extraordinaire, in a former quarry. Closer to base camp, take yourselves off to the riverside Moulin à Papier du Liveau paper mill (five minutes), where you can watch paper being manufactured and have a go at making some.
