  • Peaceful family-run site within easy reach of Saint-Omer
  • Two kilometres from the huge 1,200-hectare forest of Clairmarais
  • Huge private plots plus playground surrounded by big grassy area
Since taking over in June 2014, owners Julie and Nicolas have been cultivating a friendly familial vibe at Camping Le Bloemstraete, in Renescure, halfway between Hazebrouck and St Omer, and within easy reach of Lille and Calais. Set across two hectares, plots are huge, grassy and surrounded by big hedges to keep things private yet nicely neighbourly. There's a playground surrounded by a large grassy area to kick a ball around in before sitting down to lunch at one of the picnic benches; a pétanque pitch is on site too. For barbecue food shopping you can head into the centre of the village where there's a supermarket and a butcher, and then pick up your croissants, pain au chocolat and a baguette or two at the local bakery. For when you feel you've had enough of toiling over hot charcoals, try out the village's gastro restaurant or brasserie and finish off with a few vin rouge at one of the local bars. If you fancy an off-site adventure, ask Julie and Nicolas how to get to their favourite trails and nature spots and they'll give you plenty of information about where you can go from the site on hikes and bike rides around the area.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Wonderful friendly, helpful and informative welcome on arrival. Nicely laid out site with spacious pitches interspersed with static caravans. Excellent wi-fi at the house - I sat at a picnic table nearby - but no wi-fi on the campsite itself. Less than an hours drive from Calais and very easy to find.

Disliked: Nothing at all.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Nicholas and Julia were so friendly and helpful! Offered info on area and tips for activities .A quiet, eclectic site, wild patches, pygmy goats and chickens. We had a pitch with high hedges and our own tap. We were in between 2 mobile homes, one occupied by a very friendly elderly lady. Enjoyed the area. Explored a nearby town, a beautiful park and waterways. You need to like rural. Only about an easy hours drive to channel tunnel. Didn’t explore nearby village. Our phones worked for internet.

FHU grass RV campsite

Liked: Stopped here as fist stop off the Chunnel. It was a long drive so the peace and quiet was just what we needed. Sadly needed to be away early next morning. Nicholas was very welcoming and helpful. Would liked to have stayed a couple of days - but maybe next time.

Disliked: Nothing noting our start stay

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Very helpful & pleasant owners who helped us translate & find garage as we had gear problems with van. Large pitches, quietness of site, proximity to village & range of places to visit within an acceptable drive. Animals to occupy 8yr old granddaughter.

Disliked: Showers...if you could call them that! & fact it took ages to get water hot. Dog poo on our pitch when arrived and on path/ road near a few days later. We cleaned ours up in bags...other people with dogs should also.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: A great family run campsite. The couple who own it were so helpful and were ready with brilliant advice on where to visit and what to do around the area. They came to my in-laws rescue when their van broke down and needed to be taken to a garage. The site is small and quiet and the pitch size was very generous and the ground nice and level. The children loved the goats and chickens and spent hours in the little play ground. The facilities were clean. If you are looking for a quiet campsite, close to different places to visit, this is it.

Disliked: The showers were cleans and had hot water but the water came down in a little stream which made it hard to wash your hair

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Laid back, peaceful, large pitches with electric and water close by. Toilets and showers new and clean. Loved the mix of clean well maintained areas with older a little bit ram shackle areas with hens wandering about, and a couple of goats. Not too big., intimate. A real feeling of being away from it all. Lovely friendly owners . There is wifi but I used my phone so can,t comment.

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

The huge 1,200-hectare forest of Clairmarais lies less than two kilometres away from Camping Le Bloemstraete, for scenic hikes and bike rides among its old oak trees while you keep a beady eye out for owls and grey herons. You can also trek around a trail that winds past the pond of Harchelles (built by monks) to the pilgrimage site of the Clairmarais grotto, which lies among the woodland. Then, climb aboard a bacôve (flat-bottomed marsh boat through the maze of waterways that make up the UNESCO-listed Audomarois marsh, set around the historic cultural centre of Saint-Omer. Also around this area is the Platier d'Oye nature reserve, the first feeding area for migrants birds en route to their winter homes and so an excellent spot for birdwatchers. Other good sightseeing options in the area include the World War II bunker complex of La Coupole, and the historic town of Cassel with fab historical spots such as an 18th-century hilltop wooden windmill, the cobblestoned Grand'Place, a Flemish Gothic-style church, a museum and lots of photogenic 16th-century Flemish buildings.
