  • Peaceful site in 100 acres of private forest in the Midi-Pyrénées
  • A 20-minute drive from the Sidobre; easy access from the D55
  • Foraging workshops and nature walks available; river swims close by
If you’ve ever dreamed of immersing yourself in peaceful forest surroundings but the idea of having to navigate lots of narrow little roads puts you off a bit, you need to take a look at La Maison dans la Forêt. As the name suggests, this Midi-Pyrénées site is tucked away in a private 100-acre natural forest, with a fabulously peaceful atmosphere and gorgeous views all around. It’s a place where you’ll really be able to soak up that rural vibe – taking walks along the property’s footpaths, taking a dip in the river five minutes’ walk away, fishing for crayfish at the old mill and sourcing fresh water from the natural well 200 metres away. Want to deepen your experience even further? Your hosts Elise and Max offer edible plant and mushroom identification walks and workshops, and can also organise tennis lessons for kids aged three and over. If you’d prefer just to relax, that’s fine too – there’s a lovely sheltered relaxation deck that’s got hammocks, comfy seating, a solar shower and space to do yoga. With all this on site, it’s likely to feel like you’ve travelled a long way from civilisation – but in fact this site is very easy to get to, as it’s just a short way off the D55 main road about five minutes’ drive from the village of Vabre (a handy place to source self-catering supplies or something from the café). Being so near the road also means you’ll easily be able to get out to explore the area – one of the local highlights is the Sidobre, the largest granite plateau in Europe (20 minutes’ drive away).

Local attractions

Once you’ve warmed up with a stroll around the site’s own footpaths, you can head out to hike along one of the three trails that leave from the site (including a very easy one) or explore one of the 60 or so trails around Vabre. All sorts of scenic views await, including waterfalls and green hills. The most famed views around here, though, are at the Sidobre (20 minutes’ drive). The huge stones at this place (said to be the largest granite plateau in Europe) are hugely impressive, and intriguing too. How did they end up perched on top of each other like this? Legend has it they were thrown there by the gods… For other outings nearby, there’s a tennis court and swimming pool in the village, or you could set off to meet the big cats at The Three Valleys Zoo (20 minutes). There’s also a chance to learn about the big skies above at Planète Tarn (20 minutes), which offers planetarium shows, workshops and night hikes (book your activities here in advance).
