  • Family-friendly campsite 25 minutes’ drive from Rocamadour in the Lot
  • Loubressac, Sarlat and the Gouffre de Padirac all 45 minutes’ drive
  • Heated swimming pool and playground; snack bar and bread delivery
When the Dordogne Valley comes a-calling, you couldn’t be better placed to discover all its wonders than at Camping Bellevue, a family-friendly site in the Lot between Rocamadour (25 minutes’ drive), Padirac and Sarlat (both around 45 minutes). Large, quiet and partially shaded pitches are available for tents, caravans and campervans, with electric hook-ups and water on all pitches. This well-kept, leafy landscaped site has a snack bar (with a shady terrace for shelter from the midday sun) so you can keep the kids topped up with ice cream and cold drinks, and a small grocery shop with a daily bread-delivery service. Youngsters are kept happily busy in the heated swimming and paddling pools, and there’s a sizeable playground with a trampoline and bouncy castle, plus a pétanque alley and ping-pong tables. Even better, the small petting farm with horses, goats and sheep is guaranteed to become a favourite with all ages – while many hiking and mountain biking trails start from the campsite.

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Local attractions

Pretty towns to explore include Loubressac, where red-roofed cottages sit on a rocky ledge, and Sarlat (both 45 minutes’ drive) with its cobbled streets lined by mellow-stones houses and Renaissance mansions. However, medieval Rocamadour (25 minutes) is one of the biggest-hitting visitor attractions in the Dordogne – an area with many fantastic sights to see. Built into steep cliffs overlooking the Alzou Valley, this ancient village is generously littered with 12th-century chapels and enticing souvenir shops stuffed full of local wines, cheeses and soaps, all alongside the Romanesque-Gothic Basilica of St-Sauveur and millennia-old limestone formations in the Grotte des Merveilles. More spectacular subterranean caves include the Gouffre de Padirac (45 minutes), where you can take a boat cruise on the underground river network; another surefire hit with all the family will be Lascaux II (an hour), with its carefully reproduced replicas of Paleolithic cave paintings originally discovered nearby in 1940. Castles loom large in importance too: you can nose around the opulent decorative-arts collections at hilltop Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux (50 minutes), and the Château de Montal (45 minutes) is open for guided tours of monumental apartments and a formal knot garden.
