The river dourbie
La couvertoirade is 20 minutes' drive
Spectacular millau viaduct

  • Quiet family site 10 minutes’ walk from Saint-Jean-du-Bruel in Aveyron
  • Gorges du Tarn, Millau Viaduct and the Cévennes half an hour’s drive
  • Tree-shaded pitches with direct access to the River Dourbie
Just outside the pretty Aveyron village of Saint-Jean-du-Bruel at an altitude of 520 metres, family-friendly Camping La Claparède sits under a canopy of trees on the banks of the River Dourbie. Being about 25 minutes’ drive east of the A75 autoroute, it’s easy to reach and makes a peaceful base for hiking in the Cévennes National Park, rafting the Gorges du Tarn and admiring the stunning Millau Viaduct – they’re all about half an hour’s drive away. However, should you prefer to abandon the car, there’s plenty to keep you occupied on site. There’s a playground, ping-ping tables and pétanque court, or you can go fishing for trout, wild swimming and kayaking on the river. More extreme sports like caving and paragliding can be organised from La Claparède too. The roster of site facilities includes accessible showers and washing-up sinks. There’s also a bar/café to keep hunger and thirst at bay, and a communal barbecue is available for creating alfresco meals. You can also walk to Saint-Jean-du-Bruel in about 10 minutes; the village has a couple of shops, a brasserie and pharmacy.

Local attractions

You’re in something of a haven for outdoor pursuits at Camping La Claparède. A multitude of hiking and cycling trails start from the site, and you can explore the spectacularly untamed Aveyron region on horseback (half an hour’s drive) or on donkey treks (40 minutes). As well as lots of wild swimming spots and potholing options, the Gorges du Tarn (half an hour) also offer up an incredible array of whitewater sports like canoeing, kayaking and rafting. Little beats seeing the valleys and jagged rock formations of the Cévennes National Park (half an hour) from above; aerial sports available locally include paragliding, hang gliding and gliding from Airzone Paragliding (40 minutes). If conditions are right, you can zoom over the Cirque de Navacelles canyon (50 minutes) and the soaring Millau Viaduct (half an hour) too. Turning to matters cultural, you can visit the Caves de Roquefort Société (45 minutes) to see the famed blue cheeses being matured, or take in displays on traditional Aveyron farming methods and lifestyles at the quirky Ferme Caussenarde d’Autrefois (an hour).
