  • Shaded park on the banks of the Hers river just outside Mazères
  • An hour's drive from Toulouse, Carcassonne and the Pyrenees
  • Swimming pools and fishing on site
A serene slice of riverside rural life, with the added bonus of being a leisurely amble from shops and restaurants? That’ll do nicely, merci beaucoup. Ticking many boxes on wishlists for both chilling out and convenient amenities is Camping La Bastide, a five-hectare site on the banks of the Hers river. There are lots of lovely little shaded spots to relax in, and there’s direct access to the river for fishing or canoeing, and the town of Mazères is a 20-minute trot away. Plonk down here for a little while and you’ll be within easy reach of all sorts of day trips – Toulouse, Carcassonne, Cathar castles and the Ariégoise Pyrenees Regional Natural Park are all within an hour or so’s drive. Dawdling on site is an equally fine prospect, though. Splash around in the swimming pools, lob some balls about at the tennis court, or limber up your pétanque arm in prep for the tournaments that run here in high season. Pétanque not your forte? Perhaps you’ll be more at home joining in with a game of volleyball or settling in for a show or a themed dinner, all of which feature on the summer schedule. For children, planned activities run during the summer season. Several times per week (usually at the end of the day or in the early evening), the staff will occupy them so that parents can get some peace and quiet.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Good sized pitch ! Toilets clean !

Disliked: Bar staff would not serve us food said they were too full ! Approx 30 people eating ! We left and returned 1hr later! 4 people had just been served and apart from them the bar was empty ! Again asked for food ! Replied no we are shut ! Clearly don't like the English ! Still waited 10 mins to be served a drink ! Unwelcoming and unfriendly !

Primitive grass tent campsite (backpacker)

Liked: Beautiful location, lovely swimming pools and a private feel to the campsite. Very welcoming and we really enjoyed our stay and exploring the surrounding areas.

Disliked: Nothing, but a couple of toilet door locks needed fixing and a light which was a little inconvenient a couple of times.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Good pitch and toilet facilities. A short walk into the village so handy for essentials. The site was very quiet and because it was early June nowhere open.

Local attractions

Toulouse makes a great day trip for all sorts of visitors. There are loads of churches, museums and gardens to wander around, and the city’s also got a fab reputation for its eateries and markets. Tiddlers may prefer to focus on the space-themed Cité de l’Espace, hit the rides at Animaparc theme park or take a boat trip down the Garonne river. Carcassonne is an equally excellent place for a day out – amble around the medieval citadel, take a trip on the Canal du Midi and gurn at the gargoyles over at Château Comtal. Also recommended around the locale are the medieval bastide town of Mirepoix, the Cathar castles of Montségur and Roquefixade, and lung-stretching hikes in the Ariégoise Pyrenees Regional Natural Park.
