  • Family camping by the Ariège river at the foot of Plateau de Beille
  • A 10-minute drive to Lombrives Cave, and 55 minutes to Soldeu
  • Spacious pitches shaded by poplar trees; fishing and walks from site
Quiet, family-friendly and set in Ariège Pyrénées countryside with a mountainous backdrop, Camping du Pays de Beille serves up a simple camping experience close to the Ariège river. Spacious pitches are tucked into the shade of poplar trees, and each is provided with water and electricity. Chances are that while you’re on site, you’ll hear little else other than birdsong and the burble of the river in the background. Nearby, you can go trout fishing on the river, or practise kayaking in the fast-flowing waters. Landlubbers may prefer to get out hiking in the mountains or up the adrenaline levels by rock-climbing at the famous Quié de Sinsat – dogs are welcome to join in these adventures too, as long as they're kept on a lead while you’re on site. There’s plenty for kids to do: let toddlers loose at the play area, challenge teens to games at the boulodrome or compete in table-tennis matches. Should there be an odd day when the weather doesn’t play fair, you can all retreat to the meetings and activity room to read and play games. Keep everybody and everything sparkling clean in the shower blocks (one with disabled access, another with a washing machine), and in high season there’s also a freezer available for storing essentials like bread and ice cream.

Local attractions

If you’re visiting in winter, drive over the border into Andorra for a whizz down the slopes at Soldeu (55 minutes’ drive). Stay closer to home and go skiing or snowshoeing at Plateau de Beille (25 minutes), which in summer doubles as a hub of mountain biking and hiking. Numerous walking and cycling trails dot the area, from a short walk to a small fortified cave hidden on a sheer cliffside at Spoulga de Bouan (10 minutes) to some fairly serious hiking in the Parc Naturel Régional des Pyrénées Ariégeoises (45 minutes). If you’d rather be out on the water, try your hand at kayaking in white water from Waterploof (five minutes), and go wakeboarding – or hire a pedalo if you’re with young children – at Base Nautique Téléski (20 minutes). For something just a bit different, take a boat cruise down the underground river at Labouiche (40 minutes) – and there are more spectacular underground caverns at Lombrives Cave (10 minutes).

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked This campsite offers the ideal location tucked away in a forested valley with a small stream running alongside it. Tranquillity abounds. The hostess is a smile-ready woman who makes you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. The site also has a large game room for children with toys, board games, and books. The facilities (showers, toilets, and dishwashing sinks) are large and clean.

The campsite is also a short walk from the small village where you can find two small grocery stores, three restaurants, and a small bakery and coffee shop.

Disliked We enjoyed everything.

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked This site is an example of how camping should be. Very friendly staff, soap, shower gel, razors, bin bags are all available for free.
Clean, hot showers and toilets are heated and a pleasurable experience this time of year. Grass pitch was mud free so no mud on shoes every time you step out.
Telephone service was okay for streaming. I did not try WiFi.
Games area at the side of the river, as are a number of pitches.
Village has a Spar shop and a variety of other local coffee shops, shops and the like.

Disliked I honestly can't think of anything to dislike.

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked We received a very warm welcome to this is a lovely site next to a river with plenty of trees for shade. It’s within easy walking distance of the small town with an excellent Sunday market. There also seemed to be some good places to eat.

Disliked The facilities are rather tired and we had to remember to take our own loo paper.
