Swimming pool

  • Small and quiet site with fishing lake, on a former farm in Limousin
  • Monts de Blond within 10 minutes' drive; 40 minutes to Limoges
  • A 10-minute drive from Bellac: restaurants, shops and river walks
Catch a carp, hail the herons and cycle up the Monts de Blond from Fonclaire, a small and secluded site in the Limousin region. The landscape in this part of central France is a gentle one: forest-covered hills interspersed with multiple lakes, rivers and streams, and the odd castle rearing up from the granite. Fonclaire makes a fine base to see it all from… deer often wander through the pastures of this former farm, while herons and buzzards flap and soar overhead. Aquatic antics are the name of the game on site: there's an outdoor pool for the splashers and swimmers, while anglers can hang out at the private (catch and release) carp fishing lake (rods and tackle can be provided for a small deposit). Outdoor board games, bike hire, a play area and badminton are also available for guests. For those who might be more into wandering, the trés belle town of Bellac is 10 minutes' drive away, with restaurants, shops and river walks down the Vincou, or you could head to the lovely lakes at Cieux (20 minutes) and Saint-Pardoux (40 minutes) for canoeing and kayaking. Market days make a great opportunity for picking up a picnic, and the riverbanks a prime spot for eating your foraged wares…

Liked: Everything about it was good, customer service was good and they speak english too. The pool we were told was only put in recently and it shows, it is really nice around the pool area. We intended staying for 1 night but done 3. I would definetly stay again.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: A nice quiet site away from the major highways but not too far away, so a short diversion from the A20 if you are going north or south. Surprisingly few biting things here. A road is nearby with very little traffic even during the day but you do hear them pass if they’re going fast. There are two grassed fields and a wood to the south with Glamping tents. The pool is the cleanest we have experienced so far, there is a fishing pond and we saw some big carp being caught. In the barn are a fridge and freezer, a gas cooker and a microwave, there’s outside tables and chairs to eat at with one area under cover near the barbecue. The showers and toilets are good but the owner plans to refit the whole facility this winter (2024) so I’m looking forward to seeing that next year. There’s a kids play area in another field and the whole site is kid friendly, the pool and the pond are well fenced, children must be supervised there. Order breakfast the night before and it arrives nicely presented on a tray next morning. The light pollution is minimal so the stars are very visible at night, some may need a torch at night as the site is not full of blinding lights everywhere, which we liked. The site is owned by a very nice family, the owner is often seen about cleaning things but not too busy for a quick chat, there’s a bell at reception to call for assistance. We really like it here and will be back with an update next year.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Lots of space, lovely staff, clean facilities, would definitely call again and recommend, well worth the money if you’re there for the day.

Disliked: My only comment is that the toilets aren’t separate from the washing up area, which I find a little awkward (stage fright)

Liked: We liked the camping field has trees for a little shade and also the lakes the wood so we can go for a walk. Loved the pool to swim in and to pop in and out to cool. Showers are good and toilets are clean. Chris the owner is friendly and approachable.

Disliked: Not a dislike but would like the emptying of the motorhome grey, toilet waste and filling with fresh water all in the same place.

Local attractions

The town of Blond five minutes’ drive away is the gateway to the Monts de Blond, an enclave of granite mountains covered in forest and teeming with wildlife. Many of the Limousin’s famed 7,700 kilometres of bike trails thread their way through and around this area; overheated bikers and hikers can stop off at the clear, refreshing and highly dippable lakes and pools. For town-based adventuring, you can’t do better than the old walled citadel of Rochechouart 45 minutes away, sitting in a dip created by a meteorite (that’s possibly why such a sturdy castle was built here, millions of years later). Wander around here to find the museum of modern art hidden within its thick walls, then up your historical times with a visit to the Roman baths at Chassenon, 40 minutes from the site. Head over to Limoges (40 minutes) to compare their castle (it's heavily castled in this neck of the woods), see the church that took six centuries to finish (builders, eh?) and pick up some porcelain. There are lots of adventure parks in the environs as well: ropes and swinging at Tarz en Arbre, go-kart rides and slides and boat-based antics at Parc Bellevue. Parc du Reynou zoo is within 50 minutes' drive.
