- Family-friendly riverside site 10 minutes' walk from Corrèze
- In the Millevache en Limousin Regional Natural Park
- Restaurant with takeaway service and theme nights
Camping Au Bois de Calais isn't near Calais, but in a rather fine spot at the southern end of the Millevaches en Limousin Regional Natural Park, on the banks of the Corrèze river and a 15-minute walk from the village of the same name.
It’s a gorgeously green site with plenty of trees for shade, and surrounded by woods for peaceful seclusion from the outside world. Venture off site by foot and you’ll find all sorts of lovely places to walk nearby – mountains, waterfalls and heather-covered moors among them.
Before you stride forth, however, you’ll be needing a decent breakfast, so pick up your pre-ordered bread and pastries to set the day up properly. Later on, post-wandering refuelling is available in the form of all-day snacks as well as a seasonal menu of local dishes for lunch and dinner, with theme nights thrown into the mix for good measure in high season. If you’re not feeling suitable for public presentation, you can get a takeaway and retreat to your own personal patch (if you’ve perked up later, you can always trot back for a drink at the bar).
For activities, there’s a big multisports pitch for games of basketball or football, or you could slope off à deux to perfect your pétanque technique or aim for a hole in one at the miniature golf. The site also has a big outdoor pool for swimming and water games, with aqua gym classes in summer.

Local attractions
As you may imagine from a site in a natural park, there are lots of outdoorsy things to occupy your time with around this varied terrain of moorlands, forests, meadows and woodlands, with lots of trails for hikers and cyclists: pick up leaflets at the local tourist office to find a route that tickles your fancy. A popular place to walk is at Gimel-les-Cascades, 15 minutes’ drive away, where you can visit the ruined Château de la Roche-Haute and walk to the series of waterfalls.
For watersports, it’s a half-hour drive to Marcillac-la-Croisille, where you can hire canoes, kayaks, sailing boats and pedaloes. Or you can continue down to the Dordogne river, 45 minutes away, for canoe trips past the river’s cliffs and castles.
A 20-minute drive from the site is the President Jacques Chirac museum, which collects together all sorts of gifts the president was given during his tenure, along with other memorabilia. Looking somewhat further back in time, there’s a Middle Ages discovery centre in Égletons, 25 minutes away, and medieval towns and villages such as Meyssac and Brive-la-Gaillarde, both a 45-minute drive away.
