  • Quiet family campsite 10 minutes’ walk from the centre of Pézenas
  • Plage Richelieu a half-hour’s drive; Château de Flaugergues 45 minutes
  • Regional restaurant and takeaway service; swimming pool and games room
How about a family sojourn in the middle of Languedoc wine country? And on a campsite with an acclaimed restaurant serving up local specialities too? Camping Saint Christol comes up trumps in both cases, set in leafy surrounds 10 minutes’ walk from the centre of Pézenas in the scenic Languedoc-Roussillon. Proprietor Jean-Marie Bel and his team welcome you to this family-friendly campsite, which has lots of peaceful nooks and crannies shaded by trees. During the day, life revolves around the outdoor pool and sundeck, although there’s a TV room and games room with ping-pong tables and arcade games for any teens wanting to hang out together away from mum and dad. There’s certainly no need to worry about catering for the family. A morning bread service provides fresh bread and pastries for breakfast and the restaurant has a varied menu of regional dishes – think vast planchas of seafood paella, beef bourguignon and apple tart – and you can get frites as a takeaway for the kids. In high season, a schedule of evening entertainment kicks off too. Should you want a change of scenery, hotfoot it to Pézenas to wander its pedestrianised old town packed with artisan shops, or hit some Languedoc vineyards for tours and tastings (several within 25 minutes’ drive).

It seems to rely on its location and not on its cleaning standards.

Liked: Disgustingly dirty toilets not cleaned once while we were there for three nights, and no hot water in the showers, however a great location for walking into the town of Pezenas.

Disliked: Disgustingly dirty toilets not cleaned once while we were there for three nights, including the sanitary waste bins which haven't even got lids on them, and there is no hot water in the showers. We had a cold shower the first morning after we arrived, and even tried them in the evening to see if hot water had just run out in the morning, but not the case as they were cold all the time. The shower block is also woefully poorly maintained. There was even a small tree/plant growing out of one of the shower cubicle tops which had been "pruned" a couple of times rather than being removed and fixed. Lazy! The gentleman running the bar was quite rude and had a dog that looked friendly but was aggressive towards us as soon as it saw our dog. He clearly would rather be in the bar and watering the plants than cleaning. The pool area is a disgrace too. The childrens pool is empty apart from about 3 inches of stagnent water (althought there is a sign saying "childrens pool not in use" but no explanation why) and the main pool has no loungers and the trees are all bare of leaves and the whole area is unwelcoming. The whole place needed a damn good clean and total overhaul. It could be a lovely site but is severely under managed and badly maintained. In summary I'd say it needs new owners or the current ones to get a grip on it. It seems to rely on its location and not on its standards.

Power optional grass and earth campsite (solo)

Liked: Nice bar and cafe on site and owners were friendly. Facilities were ok. Short walk to take away pizza and into town.

Disliked: Pitch could be described as earth and gravel - normal given the climate. Great if your in a motorhome but not so good for tents.

Liked: Incredible location

Disliked: Our welcome was incredibly uncomfortable. Host used an expletive and snapped a pen whilst angrily trying to understand my (fairly easy & common) name. Gave our stay a very odd start and the vibe didn’t really mellow after that. Functionally, pitches were dust & dirt, and we couldn’t use our tent pegs as the ground was too hard / rock. Toilets weren’t great for cleanliness. Pool area look like it hadn’t been cared for in years.

Local attractions

Kids may clamour to visit the seaside, so humour them and take them for a dip in the Mediterranean at sandy Plage Richelieu (half an hour’s drive), before heading to the lazy river at Pirate Cove (25 minutes) or the inflatable climbing courses at Aquapark Cap d’Agde (half an hour). Treat yourself to a Jacuzzi at futuristic Archipel la Cité de l'Eau Centre Aquatique et Spa (25 minutes), while the kids splash around in the (supervised) pools. Pézenas (10 minutes’ walk) rewards a day exploring its mellow-stone medieval streets lined with grand mansions like the ornately vaulted 15th-century Hôtel de Lacoste, open for art exhibitions. Admire the masterly paintings and antique furniture at the Musée de Vulliod Saint-Germain, or have a look at the model boats and trains in the Musée International du Jouet. For more regional culture, see the priceless Flemish tapestries and decorative arts displayed at landmark Château de Flaugergues (45 minutes’ drive), amble around the formal gardens and take a tour of the winery.
