  • Rural budget site on a hill a 10-minute drive from Lac du Salagou
  • Lodève 15 minutes’ drive; Jardin des Plantes de Montpellier 45 minutes
  • Shower cabin with views of the lake; communal fridge
Step this way for a wild-camping holiday (though one with several welcome perks – more about those in a minute) in a remote corner of the stunning Hérault department of southern France. As an added bonus, if you stay at Chez Ruben, you can get a real feelgood vibe, knowing that the euros you spend here are reinvested in developing the land and its equipment. This blissfully peaceful site occupies a rural area at the foot of a forested hillside about seven kilometres north of Lac du Salagou (10 minutes’ drive). In fact this reservoir, which is renowned for its red sandstone rocks, is so close that you can see it from the site. The lake is a popular destination for swimmers, watersports enthusiasts and anglers, while the desert-like landscape that surrounds it is a playground for hikers and mountain bikers. Grass pitches at Chez Ruben sit on wide terraces along the hillside, among ancient and shade-giving trees. And what about those wild-camping perks mentioned earlier? Well, there’s a composting toilet, a shower cabin with a pretty spectacular view of the surrounding hills and a washing-up area, plus a communal fridge freezer where you can store your barbecue essentials and a picnic table where you can devour whatever you decide to grill. As for provisions, a large commercial area with supermarkets (and fast-food restaurants) sits just across the A75 (10 minutes); alternatively, you can head to the town of Lodève (15 minutes) for independent food stores and interesting global dining options.

Powered grass and earth campsite

Liked: The location, the views, the very basic yet entirely functional facilities. We used this site as a stop over on our way to Spain. It had electric hook up and a dry toilet and an adjoining shower. It was 0” when we woke just before dawn, and the memory of a nice hot shower while watching the sun rise will stay with me for a long time.

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

Grab your binoculars and head to the Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park (40 minutes’ drive), where a range of landscapes – from mountains to woodlands and scrublands – is home to assorted birdlife. You might be able to spot eagles and kites soaring overhead, or woodpeckers in dense beech forests. If you like your nature somewhat less wild (or more tamed), you might like to visit the Jardin des Plantes de Montpellier (45 minutes). Established in 1593 (which makes it the oldest botanical garden in the country), this green haven comes with multiple themed areas, including medicinal herbs and fragrant aromatic plants. In Béziers (50 minutes), the fortified Cathédrale Saint-Nazaire stands on a hill overlooking the town, the river Orb and its bridges, including the Pont-Canal de l’Orb, atop of which runs a segment of the Canal du Midi. The Plateau des Poètes is a leafy garden dotted with ponds and statuary.
