  • Eco-friendly site near the Hérault river in Cévennes National Park
  • Grotte des Demoiselles 25 minutes’ drive; Bamboo Cevennes 55 minutes
  • Restaurant and live music; play area and pétanque court; massages
Fancy the idea of waking up to the spectacular mountainous landscape of Cévennes National Park? You can make it happen at Camping La Corconne, a 15-minute drive from the village of Sumène, in the south of France. There’s a distinct back-to-nature vibe at this small, remote site at the confluence of the Ruisseau des Ayres and Hérault rivers. It could be because it is built on dry stone terraces, shaded by holm oaks and chestnut trees and enlivened by songbird; or maybe it’s because owners Saïda and Nicolas strongly believe in keeping things green and eco-friendly, encouraging guests to compost their food waste and to use the recycling points, for example. Leave the kids to make new friends in the play area while you treat yourself to a massage or catch up on your sleep in a hammock in the woods. After everybody’s had their ‘me time’, you can gather the family together for a game of pétanque or a refreshing paddle in the river. There’s a food shop on site selling local produce which you can throw on the barbecue; if you can’t face the idea of getting a fire going and blowing on coals all night, Nicolas himself cooks seasonal dishes and woodfired pizzas at the guinguette-style restaurant. After dinner, turn your gaze upwards: the Cévennes area is an International Dark Sky Reserve (the largest in Europe, as a matter of fact), so you can admire the Milky Way and other starry constellations in all their glory. For those who prefer another type of entertainment, there is also a lively programme of music concerts and theatre performances.

Local attractions

Forested trails lace Cévennes National Park, and you can tackle them on foot, by mountain bike or (this might appeal if you have small children) on a donkey from Anambule (25 minutes’ drive). From there, you can make your way to the Panorama sur les Cévennes viewpoint, for far-reaching vistas over forests and valleys. Access to the Grotte des Demoiselles (25 minutes) is via an underground funicular that takes you past a lifesize model of a bear – one of the inhabitants of these caverns in ancient times. Then, once you’re deep into the bowels of the earth, you can admire such halls as Notre-Dame-des-Demoiselles, which is so vast it could hold the cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris. Green-fingered folks might want to check out The Bamboo Cevennes (55 minutes), a botanical garden with hundreds of varieties of bamboo, plus a water lily pond, a traditional Japanese garden and an avenue lined with giant sequoia trees.
