It's free, quick and easy!
- Lively site with direct lake access and free high-season beach shuttle
- A 10-minute drive from Aigues-Mortes and 40 minutes from Montpellier
- Olympic-sized pool, waterslide, miniature golf, restaurant and bar
If you like your hols to have a little bit of everything – beaches, towns, amusement parks, watersports and city days – make it a priority to sort stays at Domaine Résidentiel de Plein-Air Elysée, a family friendly site in the seaside resort town of Le Grau-du-Roi in the Gard.
That’s all within easy reach from base, but hold off on those explores until everything on site has been sampled. This is a top spot for pleasantly busy days, starting with high-octane splashes into the Olympic-sized pool from the waterslide, or (for littler kids) some toddling about in the heated paddling pool.
Dryer activities will likely revolve around the tennis court, multisports grounds, pétanque court and miniature golf course, and there’s even more to do during high season, when kids’ and teens’ clubs are in full swing, sports tournaments are a regular fixture and open-air cinema nights let everyone come together.
When some off-site time is needed, explore Le Grau-du-Roi, which has a casino, amusement park, aquatic centre, bullring and aquarium, as well as a host of watersports at Port Camargue marina, all within a five-minute drive. The site’s also just five minutes from Espiguette beach, and a free shuttle bus ferries guests to and fro during high season.
Need to bolster energy after all that activity? Wander along to the site’s snack bar or restaurant for eats, and wash them down with a drink in the bar.

Local attractions
Once Le Grau-du-Roi is well and truly explored, broaden scopes to take in some of the other seaside towns, villages and resorts within easy reach. It’s around 15 minutes’ drive from base to the resorts of Carnon and La Grande Motte (both of which have lashings of beachfront), and about 25 minutes from the fishing village of Palavas-les-Flots, where guests can sign up for sea trips, jetski excursions and stand-up paddleboarding lessons.
Further afield, opt for a day or so in Sète (50 minutes) – the ‘Venice of Languedoc’ – a seaside town with a fishing port and lots of seafood restaurants to sample wares at.
Turning landward, start inland explores at Aigues-Mortes (10 minutes), a small medieval town with spectacular architecture and a famed saltworks, then travel onwards to the wild ponds and Camargue horses of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (35 minutes).
If big city days are beckoning, it’s just 40 minutes from base to the centre of Montpellier, where guests can pass the hours in the aquarium or at the zoo, wandering the aisles of the cathedral, traipsing about the botanical garden and orangery, or getting some culture at the modern art museum.
Not enough? Soak up more city days among the Roman remains in Nîmes, 50 minutes away.
