Hiking, rafting and adventure courses – or castles, caves and wildlife parks? Or maybe you fancy a mix of the active and the more leisurely? Whatever kind of combo you favour, you’ll be in a good position for it at Camping La Mare aux Fées, in the little Aude village of Roquefeuil.
There are some splendid views of the peaks of the Pyrenees from this site, and those should give you a hint that there are some excellent adventure activities in the surrounding area – in fact, there are hiking trails that start from the village to get you started. Beyond those, the area is full of mountain trails, lakes, waterfalls and caves to explore, with local providers offering activities like rafting, canyoning and mountain bike outings.
Shuddering at the thought so expending so much energy? Don't worry – there are plenty of alternative days out around here, including the grand castles of Cathar country and the underground sights of Lombrives Cave.
As well as all that, this site is very nicely set up for some chilled-out downtime, whether you're having a relaxing evening after a long hike or planning to spend a lazy day with no travelling around. Perhaps you’d like to take a dip in the pool… or just grab a cocktail and stretch out on a poolside lounger? A paddling pool, table tennis and a play area should keep the kids busy.
The site’s grocery store takes care of supplies for self-catering meals, and there's also a restaurant serving up gourmet dishes and crowd favourites like pizzas (along with local wines, of course).

Getting out to explore the local scenery can take several different forms – head out on foot, take your mountain bikes, go rafting, try canyoning, take a donkey ride with Loc d’Ânes (50 minutes' drive) or settle in for a gentle trip on Le Train Rouge (45 minutes). Along the way, don't miss local hotspots like the intermittent cascade at La Fontaine de Fontestorbes (20 minutes) and the intriguing rock formations – with names like the witch and the mammoth – at Lombrives Cave (an hour).
For wildlife enthusiasts, a trip to The House of Wolves (55 minutes) is bound to be a hit. And there's plenty for heritage buffs to feast their eyes on too, including the châteaux of Montaillou (20 minutes), Puivert (25 minutes) and Montségur (40 minutes).
Beyond all that, you may like to take a day trip to Carcassonne (an hour and a half), a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its well-kept double-walled medieval castle high up on the hillside and its restaurants serving up tasty bowls of cassoulet.
