  • Loire Valley family campsite five minutes’ walk from Savigny-en-Véron
  • On the Loire à Vélo route; Château de Villandry half an hour’s drive
  • Sports courts and play area; snack bar in high season and grocery shop
Whether you’re after some Loire Valley château-bagging or you’re keen to cycle the Loire à Vélo cycle route, plumping for Camping La Fritillaire is a good option – because from here you can do either… or indeed both. Five minutes’ walk from riverside Savigny-en-Véron in the Indre-et-Loire, this family-friendly site is also in pole position for hiking in the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Nature Park. However you spend your holiday, you shouldn't have to worry too much about food; stock up on goodies from the grocery shop to grill on communal barbecues or make up a picnic and eat al fresco. The terraced bar (high season only) opens for breakfast (order the night before) and should keep daytime snack attacks at bay. There’s plenty to keep everyone occupied on site too; kids can have fun at the play area or jumping around on the bouncy castle, you can have a basketball knock-around and play volleyball, pétanque or ping-pong, and borrow board games from reception for quieter moments. A bit of practical stuff: handy facilities for families include hot showers, laundry amenities (these incur a small charge) and a baby-changing area.

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked: Excellent site. We only planned to stay one night but booked in for a second. The grounds are very well maintained great space between pitches. The toilet/washrooms are very clean and pleasant to use. Although the lovely lady at reception said she spoke very little English - we found that her English is far better than our French 😀 Would throughly recommend.

Caraïbe 1 bedroom safari tent

Liked: After a long and tiring journey it’s comforting to be greeted with a warm friendly face from the lady at reception. She was very helpful and showed us to our accommodation. We stayed in a tent which had comfortable beds and a lovely balcony. The surrounding area is lovely with lots of trees and shrubs. We only stayed a night as we were heading south.

Local attractions

So, those Loire Valley castles. Admire the formal gardens at stately Renaissance-style Château de Villandry (half an hour’s drive), and take in the Old Master paintings at Château de Chenonceau (an hour), with its striking setting spanning the Cher River. Saumur (25 minutes) has an impressive turreted castle and is also home to ornate 17th-century tapestries in the Romanesque-era Notre-Dame-de-Nantilly church. When you’ve had your cultural fill, go Anjou wine tasting at one of several vineyards within half an hour’s drive. Kids need some downtime? Treat them to encounters with cows, goats and ponies at Véron Ecomuseum (five minutes), or join them for the Escape Game and other fun activities at the mighty hilltop Royal Fortress fortress at Chinon (15 minutes). For more active pursuits, go river fishing on the Loire (five minutes), cycle the long-distance Loire à Vélo route from your pitch or have a splash around in the municipal swimming pool at Avoine (10 minutes).
