- Brière Regional Natural Park 15 minutes’ drive; La Gacilly 30 minutes
- Grocery store, fresh bread and takeaway meals all available on site
Brittany bound? If you like the sound of a peaceful, waterside site where the family can indulge in lots of messing about on boats, then Camping Le Parc du Château, 15 minutes’ drive from Redon, is surely the place for you.
On site there are several moorings along the Vilaine River, and you can hire boats for adventures on the water. If you prefer to remain firmly on dry land, stroll up to the photogenic ruins of Rieux Castle – after which the site takes its name. In this quiet region of Brittany, you can walk and cycle on rural lanes, or go mountain biking in the Brière Regional Natural Park (15 minutes’ drive).
Pitches are spacious and tucked under trees for summer shade; they are neatly divided by hedges and shrubs for privacy. Handy facilities include a shower block and a laundry room to keep everyone and everything looking shipshape, and there’s also a convenience store with fresh bread available daily, a supply of ice cream for the kids and pre-prepared takeaway meals.
Staying here puts you five minutes’ walk from the sleepy riverside village of Rieux, which has all the vital local shops for picking up bits and pieces you can’t find at the on-site store, as well as a few bars and bistros if you’re not really feeling the self-catering vibe.

Local attractions
Small yachts can moor up overnight on the Vilaine River pontoons, but if you don’t have your own boat, you can hire small craft at the site for pottering about on the water. More boating adventures await in Brière Regional Natural Park (15 minutes’ drive), where you can rent traditional flat-bottomed punts to explore the marshy waterways.
Brière is also walking and cycling central: take in ancient dolmens, whitewashed farm cottages and waterside châteaux along your chosen routes. You’re also likely to see wading birds, and may be lucky enough to spot otters and voles. If that sparks an interest in fauna, make your next stop Branféré Zoo and Botanical Garden (half an hour) to watch seals splash around in their pool and see rhinos grazing peaceably in grass enclosures.
There are lots of pretty towns to explore too. Redon (15 minutes) is an elegant riverfront spot with a photogenic mix of half-timbered cottages and stone mansions; other places to include on a driving tour of the area include gorgeous Rochefort-en-Terre (25 minutes), one of the “most beautiful villages in France”, and La Roche-Bernard (also 25 minutes), a centuries-old town with a busy marina.
