  • Family-friendly site in a valley beside the Nantes-Brest Canal
  • A kilometre from Chateaulin on the famed Crozon peninsula
  • Garden and shop; fresh bread, croissants and eggs sold in high season
Frolic in Finistère at Camping La Pointe, a site that sits pretty in a small valley with spectacular views. You can soak up the vistas here from a very pleasant position indeed: the park has a handsome garden for guests’ use – with chickens roaming freely – and is bordered by woods with red squirrels, deer and tawny owls hiding among the trees. Cute critters spotted, head back to the park for amenities including a small shop selling essentials as well as fresh bread and croissants and an indoor communal area with a library and table tennis. The shower and toilet blocks are suitable for disabled guests. Brittany’s Nantes-Brest Canal runs opposite the entrance to the site, providing a great space for salmon fishing, waterside walks, cycling tours and canoeing trips. Being on the outskirts of Chateaulin and at the edge of the famed Crozon peninsula, home to craggy coastlines and teeny fishing towns, it’s also well placed for days out among historic villages and on white sandy beaches. The nearest town, Saint-Coulitz, is two kilometres away and Chateaulin is less than a five-minute drive away for your supermarket needs. Further afield, Quimper’s well-preserved old town is 25 minutes to the south.

Liked: Received a very warm welcome from Vikki when we arrived. Lovely natural site. Facilities extremely clean and site very well maintained. Will definitely return when we are in the area. Highly recommended. Another excellent site highly recommended by Pitchup.

Disliked: Having to leave and say farewell to the owners.

Power optional grass campsite (maximum 7 metres)

Liked: Lovely flat and well maintained pitches, with hedges on either side for privacy. Very clean facilities. Fresh bread and croissants in the morning was a total luxury. Hired barbeque was fun. Our teenager loved the free wifi area. The pretty town was only a short walk away.

Disliked: The campsite is quiet and the pitches are quite close together. You can't see your neighbours but you can hear them, so if you are a large noisy family this is possibly not the campsite for you. They insist on quiet from 11pm to 8am, so come if you don't mind being quiet.

Power optional grass campsite (maximum 7 metres)

Liked: Wonderful, quiet, well-run campsite. The facilities are well laid out and kept well throughout the day. The lovely owners set the tone by being friendly and helpful which made for a good atmosphere on the site. We also really loved being able to order very good pastries for breakfast. All in all, we had a great stay and highly recommend La Pointe... Thank you Vikki and Mike!

Power optional grass campsite (maximum 7 metres)

Liked: Incredible camp site, established gardens, the courteous hosts seem to take the whole service thing to the next level; always cleaning. Excellent knowledge of the region, recommending what to do or see. Stayed for 11 days, in all honesty, it is probably the best camp site we have ever been to (and we have experienced more than a few). Just to give an example how generous our hosts were, we had a flat car battery, despite numerous other demands on their time, gave us jump start battery. When that didn't work, had a look themselves, then took us to the local garage, and when that didn't pan out, then on to the local Leclerc store to acquire a new battery. Then charged up the old battery to see if it would retain a charge or not. It's hard not to be effusive about people who take the role of being camp managers as a selfless individuals dedicated to providing a service to their customers, far beyond the normal run of the mill providers. They are clearly not there, just to collect the rent. As a general comment, the Brittany region has remarkably few tourists, those that are, are mostly French themselves. Much the better for it. Very authentic. It's a must see.

Disliked: Absolutely nothing...

Disliked: Very small pitch, dated facilities

From the manager: Hello James, thank you for your review. We are sorry to read that you were disappointed with the size of your pitch. We have a range of pitch dimensions and try our best to allocate the most suitable sizes depending on vehicle/tent size, duration of stay and any special requests from guests when they book. As you arrived in the early evening, with your 5m campervan for a 1 night stay, with no special requests, we did give you a smaller pitch. If you had said you were unhappy at the time, we would have been able to offer you an alternative, larger pitch. We are unable to offer internet on the pitches, it has now become unacceptable to us, to pass the extremely high supply costs onto guests for what was a very poor quality connection. You were told in your information, on arrival, that it is available for free in our wifi zone next to reception. There a good connection, but we didn't see you there during your stay. We believe that the £24 you paid for the 4 of you, the pitch you had was still good value for money. You gave a 2/5 for your own accommodation???

Excellent site, clean facilities, friendly owners and level pitches.

Local attractions

Pleyben, with its famed 16th-century parish church, is 15 minutes’ drive from the site, while medieval meandering can be had in Locronan within 20 minutes, in a small town founded by an Irish missionary. Another lovely locale for a wander is the port town of Douarnenez, 30 minutes away; settle down here at one of the coffee shops to spy boats toing and froing from one of the four harbours. The port museum is the place to inspect similar vessels inside a wet dock created to simulate life at sea. Alternatively, cross the water – without setting foot on a ship – to Tristan Island just off Douarnenez’s coast. This place of nature with a ruined fort is reachable only at low tide: sign up for a trip at the tourist office and its guides will make sure you get back to the mainland safe and sound. To take to the ocean for real, make your way to Kervel (25 minutes away) or journey a further 15 to Plage des Sables Blancs for white sands, beach volleyball and watersports rentals. If built-up beaches aren’t your bag, the wilder Saint-Jean is a kilometre away along the coastal path.
