  • Friendly Fouesnant site two minutes' walk from sandy Beg Meil beach
  • Close to boat trips to the Glénan Islands and Concarneau
  • Large waterpark on site, plus kids' and teens activities in summer
There’s a promise of fresh air right there in the name of Domaine Résidentiel de Plein-Air Le Vorlen, and this friendly Finistère site certainly makes good on that promise… The alfresco times start right there at the site, which is spread across 11 hectares of flower-filled gardens two kilometres from Fouesnant. Many an open-air hour is likely to be spent at the pleasingly large waterpark (open mid-May to September), which packs in a main pool, a paddling pool, waterslides, a Jacuzzi corner and a sun terrace. Away from the water are a multisports court and a playground for the nippers to charge around at; come high season tinies and teens can join in with various activities laid on for them by site staff as well. Any grownups feeling left out can gather with their offspring later for the family-friendly evening entertainment that runs throughout the summer. Outdoorsy times aren’t confined to the site, either… a short stroll of a couple of minutes will get you down to the sands at Beg Meil beach, and if you wander a little further you can get out to the Cap Coz, where beach meets nature reserve. Watersports, scuba diving, golf, hikes, bike rides, fishing and boat rides are also on the cards around town and a little beyond. Perhaps ironically, the only aspect of the site that’s not geared up to outdoor time is the accommodation, which is in cosy holiday homes each kitted out with a well-equipped kitchenettes shower room, TV and wifi (and a half-shaded deck for those that can’t get enough of the fresh Finistère air).

Local attractions

There are many fine things to do in and around the Fouesnant area (fishing, farmers’ markets, a cider house and watersports being just a handful of them) but it’s certainly worth leaving them behind for a trip to the stunning scenery of the Glénan Islands. You can spot them from the site, but a closer look is an excellent idea – hop on a boat from Beg Meil to this gorgeous archipelago to kayak, sail, scuba dive, hike or just picnic on a white sandy beach. If you’ve got time for a second boat ride, make it the one to Concarneau (also accessible with a 20-minute drive) to wander around the old walled town or the Château de Keriolet on the edge of town. Quimper (25 minutes’ drive) is another option for town-based wanders, taking in its medieval buildings, its cathedral, its fine arts and Breton history museums and its many pottery shops (and the tasty crêpes of the Place au Beurre…) Not to the taste of the kids? Perhaps try Océanopolis, a huge aquarium an hour away in Brest.
