  • Peaceful, leafy family-friendly campsite at Châteaulin in Finistère
  • Quimper 25 minutes’ drive; beach half an hour; Océanopolis 35 minutes
  • Grocery shop, play area and trampoline; fishing on the canal
After a family holiday in Brittany? Well, in that case you should be heading to Camping de Rodaven in the pretty town of Châteaulin. As well as a gorgeous setting on the tree-lined banks of the Nantes-Brest Canal, its handy Finistère location means it’s in prime position for explorations of the Crozon Peninsula and Pointe Bretonne. This peaceful spot is spread over three hectares of leafy parkland, and as no cars are allowed, you’ll wake up to the sound of birdsong. There are lots of family-friendly touches, from a well-designed playground and trampoline for younger kids to a pétanque court for family competitions. The fishing folks among you can try angling along the canal banks, and you can hire kayaks (five minutes’ walk) for a paddle through pretty countryside. On a practical level, the place has you covered too, having a grocery store for re-provisioning, while modern showers, baby-changing amenities, a laundry service and washing-up sinks add to the ease of family life on site. There is also a daily bread service in July and August.

Local attractions

First stop might be Châteaulin (five minutes’ stroll to the town centre); this flower-filled Breton market town serves up walks along the River Aulne, mellow-stone churches and a choice of shops, bars and restaurants. Other gorgeous villages to check out include Locronan (20 minutes’ drive), with its cobbled streets lined by handsome mansions, churches and chapels, or Le Faou (15 minutes) for harbourside walks and visits to the 16th-century Église Saint-Sauveur and its ornate bell tower. The lovely Brittany city of Quimper (25 minutes) is also well-worth visiting; here you can have a root around the Gothic-era cathedral, characterful old quarter and a batch of art and history museums. If the kids need some fun time, make a beeline for Océanopolis marine aquarium (35 minutes) to watch sharks and rays swimming in colourful tanks. Alternatively, head off into the Parc Naturel Régional d’Armorique (10 minutes), which stretches right to the Atlantic coastline and incorporates walking trails on the Crozon Peninsula, sandy beaches like Plage de l’Aber (half an hour) and fun days out on high wires at FunPark Crozon (40 minutes).
