- Peaceful site between canal and river on the edge of Châtel-Censoir
- A 20-minute drive to Vézelay; Auxerre 40 minutes
- Direct access to Nivernais Canal cycle path; hire bikes on site
A river on one side, a canal on the other… and with a small town a few minutes' walk away too (with bus stops and a railway station for jaunts further afield). Many pieces of the ‘excellent holiday location' jigsaw are already in place at Camping Le Petit Port, just across the Nivernais Canal from the Burgundy town of Châtel-Censoir.
All of the above adds up to a site that benefits from both a peaceful countryside atmosphere and the convenience of being close to town amenities like shops and places to eat. They're only a few minutes' walk away, but you don't even have to go that far for refreshments if you don't feel like it, as you can buy drinks and ice creams on site or order bread and pastries for your breakfast.
Being right by the canal means some lovely views, of course – but it also means easy access to the 175 kilometres of bike path along the tow path. There are bikes for hire on site (including electric bikes) if you've not brought your own, and upon your return to site you can cool off with a dip in the waters of the Yonne river on the other side of the site. Other facilities on site include a play area, table tennis and a launderette.
When you're not out and about on bikes, you can take urban strolls around places like Auxerre and Vézelay, visit the Rocks of Saussois or head into the northern part of the Morvan Regional Natural Park for walks among woods, hills and lakes.

Local attractions
Heading out into the surrounding countryside, your first stop should probably be the Rocks of Saussois (five minutes' drive), a popular climbing spot that has excellent views from both the base and the top, 50 metres up. Also close by are the 15th-century Château de Faulin (five minutes), and the chance to step further back into the past among the dinosaurs of Cardoland (15 minutes) or the ancient remnants at the Fontaines Salées archaeological site.
Vézelay (20 minutes) has its fair share of historic attractions as well – chief among them the Sainte-Madeleine Basilica, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture. Musée Zervos, Musée de l'Oeuvre Viollet-le-Duc and La Maison du Visiteur are also worth visiting while you're wandering through the town's pretty streets, and there are several wineries on the edges of town.
Heading north instead, you may like to stop at the Caves of Arcy-sur-Cure (25 minutes) to see what lies beneath the surface of this area, or continue on to Auxerre (40 minutes) to explore the traditional Burgundian architecture, visit the Saint Germanus Abbey and sip a glass of local wine in a riverside café.
