  • Small, peaceful rural site 15 minutes' drive from Luzy
  • Within a half-hour drive of canoe trips on the Loire river
  • Playground, games room and pond for swimming and fishing
Seeking a serene spot for your Burgundy break? Petite and peaceful Château de Satenot may well fit the bill – this bijou rural site has the Loire a few kilometres to the west, the Morvan Regional Natural Park a few kilometres to the east and only a handful of guests on site to share the gorgeous views. Settle in here to spend laidback days of fishing, swimming and general chilling out at the site’s pondside beach area, or search out a shaded spot under an old oak tree for a snooze, a picnic or some quality time with a paperback. Nippers with more zest for activity can be kept busy at the playground or sandpit, or beat a hasty retreat to the common room for games and crafts should the clouds start to gather. Walks and bike rides are a cinch from here, not least because the friendly folks on site can lend maps to aid with navigation. Should you fear running out of pedalling energy on the hills (or after a lengthy lunch), there are e-bikes to hire on site for that little extra boost. It’s a 15-minute drive to the nearest major centres of civilisation from here, so it’s a fine idea to stock up on supplies while out and about. Morning munchies are easily sorted though – place an order the previous night and you’ll wake to a delivery of fab fresh bread and pastries.

Local attractions

Once you’ve wandered around the local woods and villages, you may also like to consider heading to the Morvan Regional Natural Park, 15 minutes away. There are heaps of trails around the hills, lakes and waterfalls here, along with good spots for canoeing, rafting and windsurfing. Paddling along the Loire river is another excellent way to spend a day – it’ll take you around half an hour to drive over from the site, and there are plenty of places to hire canoes in little riverside towns. Or you could take a half-hour drive in the other direction for farm and forest fun at Diverti’Parc, where tiddlers can follow nature trails at ground level or in the treetops, and meet the dairy herd. To take in a bit of history, pay a visit to Roman sites at Bibracte or the walled town of Autun (both around a 45-minute drive away) or amble around the grounds of the moated Château de Sully, an hour away.
