  • Peaceful rural site six kilometres from medieval Domfront
  • An hour and a half's drive from Mont Saint-Michel and D-Day beaches
  • Table d'hôte dinners available, served with homemade perry and cider
Well now, how’s this for a rather spectacular place to spend your holiday days? (Have a look at the pics, tout suite.) You don’t actually get to reside under the shelter of this site's 16th-century turrets themselves, but Manoir de la Nocherie’s grounds are yours for hours daydreaming on the lawns, roaming around one's estate and envisaging the home one will one day purchase with one’s lottery millions. For now, your temporary home will be a spacious pitch on well-kept grass either in or near the manor’s orchard, with stacks of scenic greenery all round. There’s heaps of space for you, the kids and the canines to run about, as well as a proper play area with swings, slides and a climbing frame to keep the small fry happy. All self-respecting French manor houses have a pétanque court, of course; this one is no exception, so you can play out family rivalries in the traditional manner. There’s also some fab nosh to be had at Manoir de la Nocherie in the form of table d’hôte dinners, held a few times a week in high season (extra charge applies), with menus of homemade dishes accompanied by the manor’s own cider and perry. Once (if) you're ready to explore, head out on the greenway cycle path that leads the four kilometres to the nearest village, Saint-Bômer-les-Forges.

Power optional grass campsite

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Owners dogs were friendly
Toilets had seats
Peaceful
Well signposted.

Disliked Not really a campsite. You’re just parking on owners lawn. No marked pitches, no bins, no toilet emptying point. Just someone’s lawn. I felt like us arriving was an inconvenience.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Stunning area, very peaceful, clean showers and electric and water worked well

Disliked The owners/operators were pleasant enough but gave us no info or showed us our pitch. Just said park wherever you like. Restaurant shut. One disabled show and one ordinary. Had to use the disabled as the water in the other one was cold. Did not know where bins or waste water/loo disposal was

Local attractions

Start your local adventures with a walk or gentle bike ride on the quiet voie verte path running from the site to the village along the route of a disused railway line. Or get your hiking boots on and make for Andaines forest, 20 minutes' drive away, for kilometres' worth of walking trails across its thousands of hectares (if you need an incentive to drag les enfants along for the excursion, legend has it that fairies lurk under this forest's leaves). Those who prefer to leave the trotting to the horses can sign up for forest hacks at a riding centre 15 minutes away or simply admire from afar as the draft horses at La Michaudière (25 minutes’ drive) perform dressage moves in their daily displays. An hour away is Le Pin National Stud, with a collection of pedigree horses and a discovery trail in the grounds of an 18th-century château. The north and west coasts of Normandy are reachable within about an hour and a half. Head north to take in the D-Day beaches, American War Cemetery and other tributes to the history of World War II, or go west for the UNESCO-listed Mont Saint-Michel, one of the most recognisable buildings in all the land.
